Impact of occupational pesticide exposure on the human gut microbiome
The rising use of pesticides in modern agriculture has led to a shift in disease burden in which exposure to these chemicals plays an increasingly important role. The human gut microbiome, which is pa...

8/9 ⚠️ Importantly: occupational exposure estimates are not (and should not be) considered a direct readout of compound uptake!

🟢But, the reported associations between gut microbiome and exposures estimates shows the impact of these compounds yield on the human gut environment!

7/9🧫 39 bacterial spp were significantly associated to exposure to at least 1 class of pesticides

🧐 Overall, pesticide exposures were associated with distinct presence/absence of specific bacteria. However, changes in the relative abundance of certain taxa were also observed!

6/9 🦠What about the gut microbiome?

Drumroll, please! 🥁

Except for herbicides, exposure to all pesticide classes was significantly associated with a decreased alpha diversity and a distinct gut microbiome composition!

5/9 📊In our cohort, 4.1% were assigned exposure to at least 1 pesticide class.
Males were predominant and, generally, estimates were of low-exposure. Length of employment was mostly >6 years.

This suggests a low-intensity, chronic profile of exposure.

The plot thickens!🤔

4/9🧪Estimates were classified in: No-, Low- and High-exposure.

Assessment was based on employment codes (ISCO) and a Job Exposure Matrix (ALOHA+).

🐜🌾 We looked at occupational exposures to 4 pesticide classes: Insecticides, Herbicides, Fungicides, and "General pesticides."

3/9🎯Our goal was to explore the impact of occupational exposures to pesticides on the human gut microbiome

We selected 7198 participants from the DMP, a LifelinesNL subcohort. Job exposure estimates, gut microbiome, health and employment data were available for all participants

2/9 Delving into the world of environmental exposures can be tricky.

To date, most pesticide studies focus on specific compounds/dosages. Often, these products are administrated along with other pesticides and within varying dosages.

Here, we took a broader approach! 🕵️
