Former flaneur, currently gay boulvardier. Interests: food, opera, bicycles & twirling my moustache
Moved home & first time using a gas cooker in 40 odd years. Also heavily distracted by the magnificence of Annie Lennox on BBC2 tonight.

PS Although it looked a fright this cheesy chicken & leek pie tasted great 🤷‍♂️

These are my little Sainsbury’s cookbooks. There are 7 by JD there, & Sainsbury’s also published her Christmas book & her encyclopaedic “Cook’s Companion”, which I gave my children, when they left home, though they probably learned more from Jamie Oliver 🤷‍♂️, who was just emerging then

If you are visiting Eastbourne in the next month or so I recommend “Sussex Modernism“ at the Towner Gallery townereastbourne.org.uk/whats-on/sus... also while you’re there the gallery restaurant “Light” is very nice. This was our lunch last Wednesday

If you’re anywhere near a TKMaxx, in their slightly mad deli aisle, you may find these Australian snacks, which are very good, (if not quite worth £4), but also notable for their Christian origin, and being a risky buy for the lupin intolerant

So good! 😍

🎼 so I say thank you for the muesli, for 🎶 giving it to me🎵

(also thank you Felicity Cloake)

Mind you, there aren’t many cakes I’m not a friend to. 4.30 pm + sofa + proper pot of tea + supermarket fruit cake = deep happiness 🙂

If we’re talking cakes are you sure I can’t tempt you with @nicmiller.bsky.social ‘s hazelnut & gooseberry crumble cake. Made this a day ago & half of it has mysteriously vanished 🤷‍♂️

It worked out well. Delicious! Although the recipe looks as though it might be a faff, it’s not. Every step is simple & clearly explained. I’ll be making it again. Thanks Deb!

Went to a cookery demo at Cookbookbake by Roti King to promote this book www.penguin.co.uk/books/466240... Mad skills on show, & what a lovely humble man! Rather touchingly he said that most of the recipes are from his mum. His chicken curry is worth the price of the book alone

I’m cancelling all plans today to make this! I also made your asparagus tart a couple of days ago. It was good & useful tips in the recipe

This is ours, after about 5 years, only buds now, but promising. But it should race away at yours, we saw ones covering the side of a house in Montpellier, so you should think quite carefully where to put it. Love them too

Spotted in Brighton, a rare sighting of the greengrocer’s apostrophe in its natural habitat. Getting some quite strong Eastern European vibes from this

Her Semla, a seasonal treat, are simply divine. She tells me the correct way to eat them is greedily & messily, no cutlery allowed. I’m happy to comply

If you’re in Brighton on a Saturday morning, do head down to the covered market in London Road for the www.fikabythesea.co.uk stall. Everything Jenny makes is superb

I made a cake with a Bramley, a left over jar of your cherry mincemeat & a tweaked version of @nicmiller.bsky.social ‘s gooseberry crumble cake recipe. It disappeared pretty fast, so not bad

A week ago I was at a wake for Andrew, simply a good man, also the best fishmonger in Brighton, in a local pub. It was packed. The ceiling was covered with balloons & from each hung a family photograph. Very moving. His daughter Amy, a noisy, glorious girl is now the 4th generation in that business

From my lovely local fruit & veg shop, www.fivewaysfruits.co.uk some ceps/porcini/penny buns/whatever Trevor. I think I feel an omelette coming on!

There were also these huge rather beautiful local black plums

Meanwhile, from the south coast, this is a blackberry crumble bun by the lovely and Jenny of www.fikabythesea.co.uk It’s delicious!

I agree & I’m not kidding. The best bike I’ve ever owned was a 1920s Marston Golden Sunbeam. The whole bike & all parts made in the same factory, & engineered like a Swiss watch. Such a lovely ride. Edward Elgar owned one i.pinimg.com/originals/2e...

2 magic colour treats for late Spring, coral peonies which gradually bleach to paper white, & Antoinette tulips that change from yellow & white to sunset orange. Both of them contrive to look beautiful at every stage

I had no idea you could get books there! A search for cookbooks there led me down the rabbit hole, so many of Jamie Oliver’s (sell sell sell everybody!), a book entitled “The Python Cookbook” (sadly computer coding, not snake cookery) & this too 😱
