I'm using this VO project to talk more about my reading of Arc. Sorry guys. I gotta get my political analysis in somehow. I know it's a lot of text but if you wanna see a little of why I love Arc so much and what I think about its ending thematically, I urge you to give it a read.
I think what makes this ending so fascinating for me is that Kamui will literally never win. Not for power scaling reasons with Dragon v. Bug or whatever. No, that's some bullshit. I mean that by choosing to kill all humans, he's given the game away. He's conceded the point. He has given in to Getter's presupposition that Humans = Getter = Emperor. By presupposing Getter's own framework, he's already lost the argument. He has given up any chance of actually changing the future because he has completely thrown away the possibility for humans to change. Just as he thinks Takuma is doomed to his fate as a pawn of Getter, so too has Kamui doomed himself to the exact fate he wants to avoid. He cannot win this fight by beating Arc and Dragon. That's the entire point of Arc's politics. We can't rely on 70s Machismo and hyperviolence to solve our problems anymore. We NEED to work together and try to do better than the previous generation, even if that means the future is uncertain. Takuma is not fighting just to beat Kamui in the name of Getter. He is taking the fate of Getter pilots to fight for eternity and reframing it as a personal responsibility to do the right thing. He wants to protect humans and the Earth, not to beat Kamui, but in hopes that the two genuinely can work together. After Takuma beats some sense into him anyway. By the time we get to Arc, Getter represents everything that can go wrong when humans come together. Fascism, colonialism, groupthink, genocide, patriarchy. It's a clever reframing of the ideological biases present in his 70s work. As such, I firmly stand by the interpretation that the Arc trio is the antithesis of that. They represent everything good that can happen when humans come together. Not as a racist mob, but as a collective of different people from different backgrounds who want to understand each other, work with each other, and build something better.
