While I often paint with oils, this piece (along with about ten others I was working on at the time) was done in acrylic. I had fun experimenting, especially with Liquitex for its opaque fluidity.

Planning in two stages allowed me to paint more freely, layer by layer.
Stopping was the hardest part—knowing when to step back rather than keep going. But that just means there’s always another painting waiting to be made.

This one started with sketching in the woods, filling small books with observations and feeling that early excitement about where it might lead. I did a few studies, but it wasn’t until I got some pages onto the iPad that things really started to click.
