I write about film, TV, video games and tabletop games, and culture (twistedwonderland.substack.com), and do street photography (instagram.com/mikeypstreetphotography) and I'm a writer and editor (linktr.ee/mikeypadventures)
I finally watched horror-comedy The Lair of the White Worm (1988), with Peter Capaldi and Hugh Grant. It was a little slow in the first half, but things picked up in the second, with moments involving a UV tanning bed, bagpipes, a mongoose and a grenade, and Hugh Grant swinging a longsword.

Some shots from comic con in London today. For those that come after... and, er, Mario.

Saw The Hunger Games play today, at the newly built Troubadour theatre at Canary Wharf. It had solid performances and impressive production.

The venue was barely built in time for the opening, so it has some issues. Hopefully they'll fix those.

It's worth seeing if you like the books and movies.

Apparently this isn't a detective show, but an actual photo from the scene of the Louvre heist.

I swear at least twenty Hollywood screenwriters are working on this movie as we speak. Someone on social I saw said 'heists are sooo back'. Love it, ha ha.

I'm busy, so alas, cannot go, but should you be free this Sunday morning, in London, and like Halloween and tiny dogs, get yourself to Hyde Park for the Halloween costumed sausage dog walk. And yes, I said it right.

I decided to rewatch Blade Runner, as I don't really remember it, and half suspect I never properly watched it.

Anyway, the dark and dystopian future it is set in... is LA in 2019.

The world is behind on the flying cars and replicants (or are we?), but fully on course for the dark dystopia bit.

The poster for the new Richard Linklater film, Blue Moon, feels like a breath of fresh air. Or perhaps a return to a more classical movie poster look. Either way, I'm into it.

I've just started Elder Scrolls Oblivion. I never played it originally in 2006, so I'm keen to try it now. In recent times I played a bit of Skyrim. Whilst I quite liked it I hear Oblivion is less dark and dreary in terms of world, setting, story and characters. A bit lighter, brighter and funnier.

I recently finished GTA 5 story mode. I never played it at the time of release, as it was my period of about a decade where I'd left gaming. Anyway, GTA 5 good, although the story felt a bit haphazard in its telling, and didn't make me feel, not like Red Dead Redemption 2. Overall it was still fun.

And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empire's authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege. Remember this. Try.

By episode four it begins to build the tension. The last three episodes are thrilling, suspenseful and easily match the highest points of the first season. Highly recommended. 5/5 stars.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 comes out this summer, which makes a full two years between seasons. Whilst I love the show it really tests the patience of fans.

I get why, the writer's strikes, which I fully support. But it does sting a bit.

After wandering around for what felt like hours in Disco Elysium, I finally had a breakthrough, and made it into another section of the map. After almost giving up with the game I felt elated.

Is this what being a detective feels like? When you push your case forward another tiny inch.

I want Grace Van Dien and Aimee Lou Wood to play sisters in something.

Just finished Reacher season 3. In some ways, it was a more accomplished affair than season 1.

Either way, it was a return to what made Reacher great, compared to the second season which lost its way.

Good story, great performance from Ritchson, exciting action.

I give season three 4/5 stars.

Just finished video game Avowed, in 60 hours. A bit torn. Whilst I love fantasy, and the world building and game design were good, party characters, dialogue and story didn't grab me. As it wore on, I struggled.

Combat also began to get grindy, fighting endless skeletons etc.

I give Avowed 3/5

Just watched the cinematic masterpiece, Deep Rising (1998). Stephen Sommers B-movie action horror a year before he did The Mummy. It was a lot of fun, actually. Critics scores aren't too kind to it, but if you go in knowing what you're going to get - namely, trashy fun - you'll have a good time.

Invincible is back for its third season, and I'm finding this season more engaging in terms of story than the last one. In particular the second episode, A Deal With The Devil, which was superb. I won't get into spoilers, but it felt like it played to its strengths as a show.

Good stuff so far.

Reacher is back for a third season, with the first three episodes being available to watch. And honestly, it feels a return to form, and to what made the first season so appealing. Reacher is back in a small town again (after the misfire of being in a big city in season 2) and it's so much better.

I'm pleased Mythic Quest is back with a new season. It's a fun and silly show about a bunch of characters that work for a gaming studio. Generally it's silly, then maybe once per season they'll hit you with an absolute gut punch of an emotional episode that will stay with you (in a good way).

How far back are we talking for nostalgia? Some hold up. A few years ago I enjoyed The Witcher 2 (2011) and Assassin's Creed: Black Flag (2013) - I heard a remaster is coming some time this year.

I'm tempted to play Red Dead Redemption (2010). And I've got the Bioshock 2 remaster to play.

Season 1: July 2016
(just over a year)
Season 2: Oct 2017
(a year and a half)
Season 3: July 2019
(almost three years)
Season 4: May 2022
(three and a half years)
Season 5: possibly November 2025

Millie Bobby Brown was 11 years old for season 1. She's now 20.

I'll forget to do 20, but here's one. I might do some more if I remember.

Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire is now on the Game Pass, hooray. I planned to play this after Baldur's Gate 3. Well, it was a choice between Pillars or Divinity: Original Sin 2.

I went with Divinity as that's also made by Larian studios. But I heard good things about Deadfire (made by Obsidian).

I'm so pleased Road 96 is back on the Game Pass. It's set in the late '90s in a fictional land called Petria (hint: the US); an authoritarian country ruled by a dictator during election season. You play as several teenagers as they attempt to flee the border.

This one stayed with me after.
