Ten years since I last shared this and humanity certainly isn’t getting less dumber!

Good morning! A bit noisy but lovely colours.

Lots of friends saying they’re tired just now. Butare they really?

Why would everyone be tired at the same time? Could it be that we all have too many inputs, too many pings, too many half-finished thoughts?

I spent today cutting redundant lines from a book to reduce the word count. it actually made the writing sharper and cleaner.

It reminded me of taking the stuff i didnt need out of my racing boat. Less weight meant increased performance.

Same life lessons - different contexts! 😃

Most creative advice is overrated.
You only learn to write, compose or direct by doing it badly enough times that something finally clicks.

What’s the worst “creative advice” you’ve ever been given?

I’m cutting 20% from a novel just now for a literary agent who wants a sharper fit for a defined market.
Interesting how losing pages can make the voice feel stronger, not weaker.

Have you ever reduced a project and found it improved?

Sometimes the best edit is the one you decide not to make.

A raw edge in a script or song can sometimes hold more truth than a perfect version.

I know I chase perfection and perhaps over-edit. But was the raw edge really better?

How do you know when to stop editing?

Last week I was organizing a singing competition. It’s good to give young people a chance to perform in front of an international jury.

Next week I am editing a novel for an agent before the finals of the competition ramp up again.

How varied is your creative life? Or do you prefer a single focus!

Writers rarely talk about the space between projects. The silence between a finished work and starting again when you sit with the blank template and think…

Idea? Character? Scene? Structure? Save the Cat? More coffee?
Research? Just write the first word? Tomorrow?

Good evening! Possibly my last sunset in Spain this year and it’s a good one!

A lot of writing and dealing with the business end of writing recently. Also very unseasonal grey weather so looking forward to doing this in a couple of months! I might also do some writing at anchor…

I like to be close to nature. A hike in the mountains or forests is good but sailing…

Feeling the power of a well tuned boat in harmony with the wind and the sea is like nothing else.

This is Archangel somewhere in the Med.

Hearing stories of redundancies in certain publishing houses.

They are looking for ways to compete with the proliferation of distracting AI produced rubbish at the same time as leveraging AI to save costs.

No contradiction here folks…
