Here’s how the Vikings can still win

It's always easy to say things like ^this^, and push off anti-carceral policy until tomorrow, but given how powerful the NYPD is, I don't think we want to fight that battle at the same time as the affodability one that resonated with NY-ers so well in the primary. If we do, it won't end well.

Zohran will need to be careful so he doesn't end up like Bill deBlasio, but I think if he can win enough goodwill from residents and can influence downballot races for DSA candidates in City Council & Albany, he can take a more oppositional stance against the NYPD and reduce their power that way.

To that end, I think is is evidence of tactical moderation instead of a serious break with DSA's platform. The Department of Community Safety is a better approach than what the other candidates offer, and still fulfills part of the defund platform without alienating the NYPD political bloc.

It'll already be a big lift to get his affordability agenda passed, since part of it requires the assent of the governor and the state assembly. Politically, it's critical to get that done if he wants to stay in office, continue to exercise state power, and enact progressive & socialist policy.

My thoughts on this are still a little all over the place, so bear with. My read is that any Mamdani Mayoralty will be very politically vulnerable. He doesn't have a DSA bloc in Albany or on City Council that he can work with directly to enact his agenda. He'll have negotiate to get things done.

If you’re still a member you can change the name associated with your account with this link: act.dsausa.org/survey/maili.... Otherwise, emailing membership@dsausa.org might be the way to go!

I totally get being kinda bewildered by DSA meetings though. It took me a bit to go from showing up to events to helping plan them, and that’s in a chapter 1/20th the size of NYC-DSA.

Yes, Zohran is both a Democrat and a DSA member. This is possible because DSA isn’t a political party, but a national political organization, a type of nonprofit. Like in the NYC primary, DSA chapters (and sometimes the national org) officially endorse candidates and devote energy to their campaigns

It’s worth it to note that the flat income tax only affects ~4% of NYC residents, which, if Trump’s bill passes, will get a big tax break, deduction eliminations notwithstanding. Regarding corps, many have seen incredible profits since COVID. That prosperity should be shared with the city, imo

True, the legislature and Gov. Hochul may be obstacles. He has an impressive messaging campaign and NYC-DSA is no stranger to pressuring the NY legislature. Given the strong grassroots support and (hopefully) backing from the national level, he’ll be able to get his agenda through

In short, recouping losses due to poor governance, raising the corporate tax rate to match NJ, and setting a flat 2% tax on income over $1M. Full deets here: www.zohranfornyc.com/revenue

That said, it seems like WRT your last point I may just be talking out of my ass, lol. I’d also be interested to hear your take on how these polls are deprived of context - I’m assuming their questions aren’t leading respondents one way or another

Might we expect more support for Mamdani among New Yorkers of Color than reported given these biases, then? Sounds like older, financially-stable PoC are more likely to respond, and imo more likely to vote for Cuomo in turn.

I would also be interested in this, as well as your thoughts on YouGov’s bias if you care to share. A quick search says that YouGov doesn’t advantage the right or left (at least in the context of UK politics), so I’m curious as to where that bias lies instead of the traditional right-left divide

Found the national org! Looks like the posts are twice a week or so, but it’s something :) bsky.app/profile/dems...

I’m not active on Twitter, but it seems like DSA is relatively active on Bsky and Instagram is you know where to look. Speaking personally, my chapter has done some public actions since the election and inauguration, and we’re prepping more stuff for this coming year
