We are in a forest of young trees and heavy underbrush, all decked out in vivid autumn foliage: bright greens, golds, yellows and oranges. The sun is low in the sky straight ahead and to our right, although it is mostly hidden by a tree trunk. Its backlighting is bringing out even more intense color on the leaves while mostly silhouetting the tree trunks and branches.

August 29, 1983: In some ways, the portion of the AT which I describe in this chapter can be thought of as a connecting trail between the grandeur of the Green Mountains and the magnificence of the Whites.

Beneath a bright overcast sky, a sliver of which is visible on the top right, we are walking along the grassy shoulder of a road beside a wire fence supported by rustic wooded posts. The road itself is offscreen right. The grass along the inside of the fence is sprinkled with hundreds of white wildflowers. Beyond, down a gentle slope are several grassy pastures also bordered by wire and post fences. A line of trees separates the pastures nearest us from the lower pastures beyond. A white horse grazes next to the trees. The pastures eventually butt up against the forested lower slopes of a mountain rising in the background. A large unpainted wooden barn with a sloping metal roof stands next to a tall tree not far beyond the fence on the right of the picture.

A deep baby blue sky with a few small streaky white clouds. Standing on a gray rock cliff atop a mountain. You can see for many miles on this crystal clear day. An evergreen frames the view on the right. Others are scattered through the forested hills and mountains, but the vast majority of trees are hardwoods, leafless at this early stage of spring. Looking down across a long, narrow valley hundreds of feet below winding through wooded hills. The slightest of haze cloaks the more distant hills.

June 11, 1983, 41 years ago today: I hiked thirteen book miles of the AT the previous day over Mount Rogers and the Grayson Highlands. I had intended for that to be an easy day as I savored those last giants and prepared myself for the upcoming big mileage push.

September 28, 1983: The climb of Chairback Mountain was easy, and an expanse of craggy, buckled slate gray rock cliffs around the summit had the best views of the entire range.

Bright sunshine with a few puffy clouds. We see only the portion of the sky right above the horizon, so it is a rather light blue. Standing atop a mountain on rugged cliffs of fractured dark gray rock. A few leafy ground-hugging shrubs in brick red and maroon autumn colors grow out of the rocks. The mountainside below us is covered with dark green spruce and fir trees with some hardwoods sporting orange and gold leaves mixed in. On a plateau a few hundred feet below is a large mountain pond reflecting the otherwise unseen deep blue of the September Maine sky above. Beyond the plateau is a country of rugged mountains and valleys. The plateau and those mountains and valleys are all predominantly the deep green of the spruce-fir forest with a few hardwoods beginning to show colors mixed in.

October 2, 1983: My first three-and-a-half miles took me through the end of the wilderness. The Appalachian Trail wound through an attractive forest, and it was gentle walking.

We are standing on a hill looking down over the treetops towards a broad river below us. It is raining. The river mirrors the gray sky. The far riverbank is also wooded, but the ridge just beyond is part of an area that was burnt over several years earlier. It is covered with the white charred still-standing trunks of dead trees and some shrub growth. Beyond that ridge are the lower slopes of mountain that quickly disappear into very low clouds. Some of the trees on our riverbank are turning gold or orange. The trees on the opposite bank are a riot of golds, oranges, reds and greens.

June 13, 1983: The Appalachian Trail was a varied and interesting experience this afternoon. The first mile followed paved state roads through the remainder of the broad farming valley bisected by the Interstate. It was a nice roadwalk.

The sky is a beautiful light blue with a few small hazy clouds. We are looking past a rustic wooden fencepost helping support five strands of barbed wire. There is some very tall grass growing along the fenceline. Beyond that, a tall tree frames the right side of the photo. There are pastures and farm fields, a few trees, a large unpainted wood barn with a rusty metal sloped roof and a tall silo next to a pair of large old trees.

June 13, 1983: The Appalachian Trail climbed Big Walker Mountain on a well-graded trail. Up until three years ago, the AT had turned right and followed the crest of Big Walker for many miles, but barely a trace of the old crestline trail was visible.

Beneath a cloudless blue sky a large rolling green pasture of bright spring green grasses stretches from the foreground to the base of a long, wooded ridge of darker green shades. The ridge crest is relatively flat and gently rolling. Its steep wooded flank facing the camera is cut by ravines. A cluster of several tall trees stands alone in the center of the meadow, surrounded by all that grass.

June 5, 1983: The trail crossed the road, reentered the woods, and began the climb up Iron Mountain. It followed a steeply-ascending spur ridge up through the chaotic tangles of a second-growth forest.

Beneath a hazy summer sky we are looking over the treetops at a large lake hundreds of feet below. It is mostly surrounded by forest, with wooded ridges rising above the far shore and two wooded islands within the lake. There are a few farm fields and houses scattered around three sides of the lake, the left side has a small village - a modest cluster of farms and houses. On the horizon, wooded ridges and valleys cascade off into the misty distance.

August 14, 1983: The trail turned into a virtual rock climb straight up the face of a cliff to the top of Barrack Mountain.

Standing atop a rock ledge several hundred feet above a valley. There is a small scrub pine to our left growing through the rock and an even smaller leafy shrub to our right. A wooded slope of our mountain slants down into the valley. Across the valley are more wooded hills and low mountains. About half the valley floor is green fields. The rest is forested like the hills around it. A soft blue sky with a few clouds.

May 16, 1983: The rain continued to slacken, finally tapering off by mid-morning. We had a late start to Fontana, but it was only a seven-mile hike. The sun began to break out as we climbed the Yellow Creek Range.

We are standing high atop a mountain. The sun is shining brightly. We are standing beside a flowering tree looking out at other trees covered with small bright green sprouting leaves or white buds. Below us is a valley with a large hydroelectric dam and its lake. The trees below us are intensely green, it is late spring down there. Although we cannot see the sky in this photo, the shadows below tell us it is mostly sunny in and around the valley. Beyond the lake the forested slopes of a towering mountain range rise from the lake, eventually disappearing into a deck of clouds sitting over the mountaintops.
