I wanted to create a brochure that exists in-world, something a parent might receive before the upcoming summer.

What exactly do they do at the camp? Here are a few of the lessons taught by the counselors…

The camp itself is the connective tissue for Superkind, with nearly everyone having attended camp for five summers (14-18)… since it open its gates in 1908.

The (work-in-progress) brochure is my attempt to bring the world to life visually via graphic design - just like the newspaper

That means if you simply typed out the word “Camp Super” in the font I used, Neue Kabel (Black), you wouldn't get an identical logo.

To stack the logo I had to add an extra letter P to the word “Camp” to get the balance right. The E in “Super” was modified so the crossbar (middle bar) extends backwards, giving the font a custom stylized treatment.

Next I created a full palette 🎨 to bring to life the “washed-out” retro-futurism look that I want for the world of Camp Super… a place where superpowers and advanced technology exists alongside analog gadgets… something you’d see in a Wes Anderson film.

5️⃣ Revisions - New to this, but because I planned and planned and edit as I write revisions have been smooth. I took notes as I read through my finished draft and that’s what I’m attacking in revisions.

4️⃣ Show Up - The other steps are irrelevant if I didn’t sit down to write. I set an alarm for 3 am and got up most days (I need near absolute quiet to read through my work. I read aloud and need the cadence and rhythm to feel good about moving on). I set a goal for 1,000 words per day.

3️⃣ Outline Part II - I took my board and transferred each card to a cell in google sheets. But I didn’t copy the cards as is, I reassessed the entire book 1, again going chapter by chapter to ensure plot and character and pacing made sense. Essential a revision. Not perfect, but enough to move on.

2️⃣ Outline - I’m 40 and I’ve been attempting to write books since the 6th grade. Never finished one. I decided I needed a plan to stay on track. I’m shooting for 5 books here, so I knew, on some level I needed to know how book 5 ends. So I outlined the entire series on a kid’s science project board.

The WIP Beacon Tribune logo is a combination of two gothic fonts.

I’ll soon be launching short stories from the world of Camp Super, told as if they were articles on the paper. The stories will be free on substack and wattpad, with paid subscribers receiving a digital edition of the paper, shown above as a work in progress, in several iterations.

Though the “old currency” is still accepted on the on the ocean floor and for rotten business….
