I am wondering if the cruciform is an evolved depiction of The Mother Goddess.
Limestone statue of the Cypriot Great Goddess dated ca 3000-2500 BC, Chalcolithic period. Some of her names include Paphia, Golgia, Wanassa, Kipris (Kiprida) Cycladic goddess figure carved from very-fine grained white marble. Dated ca 2400-2200 BC it is 17.5 cm high. It’s a fine example of the Koumasa type, examples of which have only been found on Crete. It was likely made there either by an itinerant Cycladic sculptor or a Minoan sculptor influenced by Cycladic works. The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, New York, USA A statuette of the Mediterranean Mother goddess, found at Senorbì, Sardinia. It belongs to the Ozieri culture (or San Michele culture) that lived on the island from c. 3200 to 2800 BC. It takes its name from the locality where the main findings connected with it have been found, the grotto of San Michele near Ozieri, in northern Sardinia, Italy. The influence of the culture extended also to the nearby Corsica and Malta where goddess statuettes similar to those of the Ozieri culture have been found. The religion included the adoration of the Neolithic Mother goddess and of a Bull god, perhaps connected to fertility. The cruciform shape resembles the figurines from Cyprus.
