Big Basin state park in Santa Cruz county is nothing short of miraculous. We counted 167 banana slugs on a 4-mile hike yesterday. Warning: photos 3 and 4 are NSFW.

3/3 It finally flew up into a tree and gulped the prey into its (see bulge in throat) « crop ». New word for me. Didn’t realize hawks gulped things whole. A last resort when pressed for time and trying to avoid losing its kill. It then flew off with this in its gullet.
