We have a lot on common. My son is a career firefighter. He was a BLM hotshot and has been in Helitack for USFS for the last 12 years.

State and Federal firefighters also spend time clearing brush, doing prescribed burns, and other preventive actions when not actively fighting fires.

I don’t blame the New York Times, as much as I blame the people who are uneducated about this and are just looking for something to complain about.

Independent fire contractors can and do hire former felons, and the USFS can hire certain felons.

They also volunteer, have 2 days taken from their incarceration for each day they volunteer, learn skills that can translate to jobs after they are released and other benefits. They are not forced to do this work..
