When one sees shocking national stats like this... then considers the gulf between the best and worst states, one dreads to think what the literacy rates are like in the worst states. What proportion of adults in somewhere like Oklahoma are actually able to read at the level of a functional adult?

Any poll like that needs to be understood alongside the fact that over half the population has the reading skills expected of an 11 year old at best.
