The station was extensively reconstructed in 1959 to amplify the existing 6 tracks (4 to SY & 2 to ER) to 10 tracks (6 to SY & 4 to ER). The photo shows the shiny new station building in Swan St, and the first of the new bridges being installed. New platforms are being built at the top centre.

It's hard to tell which is more of a dump, the old Richmond Station, or the current one.

And didn't they mess it up?!
If you're going to roof over station platforms, do it like at Southern Cross in Melbourne, with a grand soaring space (but don't put lights up there that can't be reached to change the bulbs).

Notwithstanding the terrible train service, I don't understand how finding the Zoo entrance is hard when this well signposted path is basically across the road from the station exit.
