Even as a trained scientist, it can be really hard to identify the consensus view on things in a field, to identify when a paper is just an outlier, to know what the accepted standards of evidence in different fields are, etc. It takes a lot of time and effort even if you have the necessary tools.
99% of the time, the accurate response to “I do my own research” is “you are not competent do do your own research.” (Yes, you too. Yes, me
too.)

Undervalued part of innovation / standards development is having a publicly available "conversation partner" to learn from.

Just like learning a language, fluency comes through immersion in conversation.
