You run into trouble if you equate measurement with prediction. suppose basketball skill = height + grace. If you use height as a measure of bball skill, you will conclude that grace does not improve bball skill (b/c grace is unrelated to height).

Hmm, maybe 'intention to commit murder by axe' is the cause I had in mind.

But purchasing an axe is not a cause of being an axe murderer. Being an axe murderer leads one to buy an axe and also leads to the presence of bodies, no?
