Lichen on a fallen tree in the forest. And my partner asked: ‘Did anyone of you follow the Make It Happen Stories marathon?’ I half-turned and saw my son blush. That’s stress, too: keeping secrets. My son cleared his throat. ‘I sent in three stories. The feedback was pretty OK.’ My other children gaped and my youngest asked: ‘Pretty OK?’ My son blushed more deeply. ‘Several thousand comments.’ I just love it when our children celebrate each other’s success. I remember wondering about this. But then I realised that my partner and I are always excited about the other’s success. And I’m glad that our children choose to do the same. ‘What are your stories about?’ my daughter asked. ‘My favourite story is called Breaking the Barriers. It’s set on a different planet like most Make it Happen Stories. It’s because on a different planet you can really focus on what you want to think about. Breaking the barriers is about people who live on a planet where everything goes down the drain.’ ‘Like on planet Earth?’ our youngest teased. My son nodded. ‘Yes, but it has only three countries and not as many unresolved traumata from the past. However, you have five groups of people: people who refuse to see that the way they live destroys their lives and the planet. You have people who see but believe that nothing can be done, and they continue with business as usual. You have people who live less harmful lives but are so frustrated and burned out that they need all their energy to get through the day. You have people who embrace exploitation and destruction, blame much of it on people they regard as unworthy and believe that there is only one true way to live and act. And finally, you have people who fight for a world without destruction.’ /1 ‘Sounds pretty earthy to me,’ my daughter said. My son smiled. ‘A group of people went into seclusion, three decades before the events of the story. When they resurface, they see the world with the eyes of outsiders, clearly. And they soon identify what they need to do first.’ ‘Kick the asses of all exploiters and destructors?’ our youngest said. Our son smiled. ‘Nope. Unite those who say that they care about the future of their planet.’ I admit I swallowed, and I swallowed again when my son elaborated how people who had been active for people and planet, including journalists, had not just contributed to the abysmal state of the planet but were so divided, ‘drenched in conceit, self-righteousness, arrogance, lacking the heart, courage and wisdom to recognise their allies, that they failed to unite, and that they failed to elevate and support each other. The destructors,’ my son concluded, ‘could only get this strong because those who cared were too frustrated and too self-righteous to reflect on their actions and to seek out each other. That’s why the secludes decide to find a way to bring together the people who said they cared for planet and people. Because once they are united, they can rethink and reshape the world and everything else will fall into place.’ By now, I’ve read my son’s story, blushing more than ones, and spending some hours afterwards with contacting people I had either neglected or ignored for years. The stories marathon is not just a showcase of what millions of minds are capable of if they focus on creating visions for the future, it’s also a showcase of giving a stage to a great variety of voices and minds. It is lived empowerment.

This night, after the play, Kahu and Alice sat on the roof of the Back House for a break. ‘It’s a shame you missed the play,’ Kahu remarked, handing Alice a glass of red wine. Alice smiled. ‘I saw the audience leaving. Every one of them moved to the core, it seemed to me. And Bülent said, he wants to work with your team to make plays of all the other universe stories you and your friends created about how they ended the wars on their planets.’ Kahu smiled and clinked glasses with Alice, saying: ‘We need a lot more stories out there. I tried to find a movie to watch last night, and all I saw were reiterations of the old narratives, of the big evils and the great saviours. I think those stories are partly responsible for our planet’s troubles. And I fear we’ll need to break through the crust of those stories with thousand if not millions of new stories which paint a world where we use our minds, where we decide to create, to build, to nurture, where we have discovered ways to deal with the damages we carry and with those we inflicted.’ Alice smiled broadly. ‘Anything you need to make that happen, just tell me.’

Not a war between regions. Not a global war. Of any kind. Why? Because the moment anyone raises a fist or a gun, the moment anyone is exposed as producing weapons, the moment someone smuggles a missile to a potential launch site, the moment we, the people of our planet, hear about anything like that, we stop to work, we stop to go to the theatres, restaurants, football games, museums, cinemas, shops. What do we do instead? We meet in the streets, bring our chairs, our children and pets. We share our foods and chat. At first, we only reacted to wars and threats of war. By now, we go on strike globally whenever we hear of violence, abuse, exploitation, oppression, destruction and all other violations against us, our fellow humans and against nature. Admittedly, we love meeting in the streets and chatting. But we also love our power. We love how the agitators try to send negotiators. We love how they try to manipulate us. It’s such a laugh. But you know, once we were globally connected, we had the upper hand because we are the majority and no one messes with us. money, to be entertained — while enjoying quality time in our streets — until the aggressor backs off, until the violation and its source are removed and brought to justice. You see, they have to back off. You can’t go to war if everyone is having a chat in the streets. You can’t keep plotting to destabilise a country if no one is listening. You can’t ransack a country if no one is available to do the ransacking with you. Yes, sometimes it rains. And it’s a beautiful picture when you look out of the window at the sea of umbrellas. No, music though. We always party afterwards — and a lot. But during our strikes we are simply together, letting all concerned know that violations of any kind cannot happen. Not on our watch. We will not look away. We will not normalise. We will not pretend that there is nothing we can do. Because we know by now that we have all the power in the world when we come together and refuse to be part of a society where violence, injustice, inequality, oppression, discrimination or damage to our environment is on anyone’s agenda. WE HAD A PLAN & IT WORKED There was no way we could have done this step by step. A lot needed to be done at the same time, and by different groups which worked together closely. We could have done it in secret, but we needed to act fast and for that we needed transparency. As established organisations and businesses continued to hide, water down and lie about their motives and about the state of our planet, our transparency and integrity became more and more obvious, even to the fleeting observer. We laughed and danced a lot. Dancing is important. It keeps you going. I know. You want to know the plan. You want to know how we got to restoring our planet. At first we ignored nature. (Insert a laugh.) Are you frowning? Protesting? The thing is, there had been attempts to protect and rewild our forests, lands, rivers, seas. But overall, we achieved little because corporate and political powers always found ways to make things worse. That’s why we decided to go straight to the roots of our problems and to replace (are you sitting?) to replace both the corporate and the political powers on our planet — and with did that by building and establishing our own. To be more precise: We build our own world to break our dependence on those who were hellbent on destroying us and our planet. How did we do it? In the first wave, we set up a global, independent citizen bank with no connection to the financial markets. The banks purpose is to facilitate transactions and to finance our projects, namely a new internet, a new resources and businesses network. None of our projects require regulations because by design all our undertakings aim at balance, empowerment, diversity, recovery, and are built not unlike the system we find in nature. Like nature our economic system is a living, breathing, nurturing organism. Of course, when you drain the financial markets of 500 billion JMS, someone will get very nervous, especially if those billions now circulate in a world those scrupulous players have no access to, and even worse, our 500 billion JMS finance a new economic reality with no intention of seeping any money back into the pockets of any exploitative, poisoning corporation. The thing is, we were not interested in power. We just wanted our lives and our planet back. We were sick of the idiotic fantasies of oligarchs, and of the bleeding narratives that used to make us compete and exhaust ourselves. Politicians tried to stop us. But we had cunning lawyers on our side, and soon we watched the corporations fold. Employees left in throngs to join our businesses even before the majority of customers no longer gave a damn about the profiteers’ products and their stupid marketing strategies. Once we, the majority, had jobs in companies we could get behind, other big changes got underway. We, the people, drafted a new political system. We studied existing political systems and made sure that none of the mess, we had experienced on our planet, could ever happen again. When all economic power was on our side, there was nothing our failing and corrupt governments could do. Besides the military were with us anyway. They were as tired of the blunders of the political classes and the bleeding oligarchs as every one of us. They, too, wanted peace, a world that made sense, a world that didn’t require them to kill. While it is true that our focus was on reshaping our global economy and our political systems, there were groups who, throughout this period, mapped out how and where we could rewild our planet, how our companies could be run in a way that they restored and nurtured nature instead of exploiting and destroying it, and groups whose sole focus was on how to replace everything that used crude oil. And there was more. But first we established a world economy and a partially global political system which didn’t aim at dominance, competition, growth or power but instead sought guardianship. Guardians over our resources. Guardians over our welfare. Guardians over our evolution. Guardians who initiated conversations when new discoveries called for possible adjustments. It was only afterwards that we, as a planet, took a break from economic and political tasks, took a deep breath and focused on restoring our planet. Amazingly, our changed habits, approaches and systems had already brought back a lot of nature, and our new measures for towns and cities reduced both heat and extreme weathers. The years of restoration are some of the happiest in our lives. We came together from so many different places, got rid of 75% of unnatural pavements, 70% of fences, 97% of bare facades and roofs, restructured our habitats to merge them with the natural world — and more. The last wars ended in this period, which was also a time of personal healing and finding our individual strength and joy. Today, we look back at the world of then and wonder why we had ever wanted to destroy our planet.

THE AGE OF THE RIDICULER Views from around the universe, book 4, building, part 1 In the evening, Alice chose to attend the final of the nine The universe is worried shows. She didn’t have time for it. But she still hadn’t found her balance and needed something to distract her, something that might allow her to clear her mind. Halfway into the show, Alice was laughing heartily and began to feel better. This night, the universe spoke about heroes — that is, the seven members of the universe alliance, six of whom sat on armchairs crafted from great tree roots, shared stories from their planets — tonight about heroes. The present speaker stood at the front of the stage. They wore a kind of armour made from thousands of small cones, comparable to those humans might find on cypresses, and whenever they moved or raised their arms, the rattling cones sounded like soft rain. ‘I remember the period when I was initiated into the age of the ridiculer, which is a very honourable age and comes with the great responsibility of administrating ridicule whenever a member of our society needs grounding and self-reflection. It is part of the initiation ritual to find and present something extraordinary to ridicule. My five parents advised me to take a weeklong journey along the three-islands-bridge-path circle and to seek inspiration. But a storm forced me deeper inland, on the second island, and I found shelter in an old library which was cared for by a family of sixteen. It was there that I heard about heroes for the first time, and I laughed, and laughed, and laughed. Never in my life had I heard anything this ridiculous. A hero! A single person who would make everything right? Ridiculous! “You are right to laugh,” said one of the library’s elders. “But here is something you might not know. You are only capable of seeing the hero for what he is, because your mind has been trained to think for itself, your body has been trained to act for itself, your soul has been nurtured so that it can trust and bond with your fellow humans, animals and plants alike. It’s not like that everywhere. On some planets, humans have lost all sorts of connections. And a human without connections is a scared creature. A scared creature’s mind, body and soul are often scarred, damaged, in need of healing, and rarely get what they need to be whole, balanced, capable of trust and bonding.” “But that is dreadful!” I exclaimed and felt echoes in my body, mind and soul of incredible pain such disconnections must cause. “They rarely feel the pain any more,” the elder said. “They only sense what they call anxiety and helplessness. It’s a state where they lost their grounding.” “But don’t they have anyone who could ridicule them?” The elder shook their head. “Sadly, not in a way that would allow them to find purchase.” “How dreadful!” I exclaimed, shook my head and asked: “Is this why they invented heroes?” The elder smiled. “Yes. Throughout the universe, hope is every creature’s constant companion. Hope made desperate people dream of someone whole, someone who could rescue them from their dismal world and restore a world full of promise.” “How sad,” I said and wondered whether I could ever ridicule an idea which made matters worse for humans on other planets. Some days later, after studying the circumstances of how heroes, saviours and great leaders came about, I decided to find something less tragic for my presentation. I also decided, that, should I ever get the chance to travel to a planet where heroes paralyse a people, I would offer my friendship, my stories and my gentle ridicule to them.’ The speaker bowed, the small cones rattled softly, and the audience applauded. ‘What’s wrong with heroes?’ a young boy called, and Alice recognised Davie’s voice. She found him and Jack two rows behind her. Jack smiled at Alice. And the speaker on the stage said: ‘Thank you, young human. I have high hopes for you. Asking questions is a great antidote for all sorts of damages, provided one is favoured with the occasional answers.’ ‘And what is your answer?’ Davie called, grinning. The speaker smiled. ‘The hero only exists in the timid mind, never in reality. There is never a single person who can make everything right. And also, there is never a perfect constant, never a perfect world the hero could restore. The world, on any planet, is always an accumulation of moments, some of them perfect. Any imbalance, and imbalances happen frequently on all planets which are alive, any imbalance is noticed by all concerned, and balance is restored by those people who are best equipped to counter this or that imbalance. The trouble is if you allow for heroes in stories, then people might internalise the idea that their actions are insignificant because they recognise that they have little or nothing in common with the person in the story. But the truth is, everyone is always needed, and everyone always contributes to imbalances and to balances because everything is connected. The safest and most nurturing approach is to expose the hero for what it is, and then to devise a farewell ritual for all the heroes of a planet and to enter the processes of healing, strengthening and connecting. No hero can do that for anyone. It’s something every single human has the privilege to do for themselves. And once some healing takes roots, connections and strength can be built. ETNA CONQUERS LONELINESS, written by Etna, 11 years old* Hello, I am Etna. I live on the planet Bluebell, because there are many, many, many bluebells on planet Bluebell. I was very lonely because I only have one leg and I could not have friends because I could not run with them. I was so sad that I hid in my room. My parents were very busy with working. But sometimes my father brought me bluebells. He put them in a vase. That was very kind. But then he went back to work. My mother bought food and sometimes she gave me chocolate. That was very nice. But then she went back to work. I was in my room and played games on my computer. That made me forget that I was lonely. But I wished I could run around with my friends — the friends I would have if I had two legs. We live in an apartment house. With an elevator. On the eighth floor. There are many high houses all around. Some people have flower boxes with bluebells on their windowsills. In autumn of the year 7C9D, we got new neighbours, an elderly couple, Sally and Molly. They are very funny. I mean, they laugh a lot. I can hear them from my room. They sound so happy. One day, I left our apartment. And they left theirs. At the same time. And we laughed. It was so strange. I hadn’t laughed in so long. Laughing sort of broke the ice, and we began to talk while I hoppled next to them to the lift. Three days later, they asked me to take a look at something on the streets. I was curious. I liked them. I thought, why not? But I never expected this. They had bought three chairs from a jumble sale, and they got six wheels from a scrap yard. They had fixed the wheels to the chairs, and when I sat down, I could move the wheels with my hands and I race down the road — and they came after me in the other two chairs. But I was faster. Sally, Molly and my chair were my first friends. And racing in the wheely chair, that’s how I conquered loneliness. Because now I knew, it could be done. So I did it again. And again. WE HAD A PLAN & IT WORKED There was no way we could have done this step by step. A lot needed to be done at the same time, and by different groups which worked together closely. We could have done it in secret, but we needed to act fast and for that we needed transparency. As established organisations and businesses continued to hide, water down and lie about their motives and about the state of our planet, our transparency and integrity became more and more obvious, even to the fleeting observer. We laughed and danced a lot. Dancing is important. It keeps you going. I know. You want to know the plan. You want to know how we got to restoring our planet. At first we ignored nature. (Insert a laugh.) Are you frowning? Protesting? The thing is, there had been attempts to protect and rewild our forests, lands, rivers, seas. But overall, we achieved little because corporate and political powers always found ways to make things worse. That’s why we decided to go straight to the roots of our problems and to replace (are you sitting?) to replace both the corporate and the political powers on our planet — and with did that by building and establishing our own. To be more precise: We build our own world to break our dependence on those who were hellbent on destroying us and our planet. How did we do it? In the first wave, we set up a global, independent citizen bank with no connection to the financial markets. The banks purpose is to facilitate transactions and to finance our projects, namely a new internet, a new resources and businesses network. None of our projects require regulations because by design all our undertakings aim at balance, empowerment, diversity, recovery, and are built not unlike the system we find in nature. Like nature our economic system is a living, breathing, nurturing organism. Of course, when you drain the financial markets of 500 billion JMS, someone will get very nervous, especially if those billions now circulate in a world those scrupulous players have no access to, and even worse, our 500 billion JMS finance a new economic reality with no intention of seeping any money back into the pockets of any exploitative, poisoning corporation. The thing is, we were not interested in power. We just wanted our lives and our planet back. We were sick of the idiotic fantasies of oligarchs, and of the bleeding narratives that used to make us compete and exhaust ourselves. Politicians tried to stop us. But we had cunning lawyers on our side, and soon we watched the corporations fold. Employees left in throngs to join our businesses even before the majority of customers no longer gave a damn about the profiteers’ products and their stupid marketing strategies. Once we, the majority, had jobs in companies we could get behind, other big changes got underway. We, the people, drafted a new political system. We studied existing political systems and made sure that none of the mess, we had experienced on our planet, could ever happen again. When all economic power was on our side, there was nothing our failing and corrupt governments could do. Besides the military were with us anyway. They were as tired of the blunders of the political classes and the bleeding oligarchs as every one of us. They, too, wanted peace, a world that made sense, a world that didn’t require them to kill. While it is true that our focus was on reshaping our global economy and our political systems, there were groups who, throughout this period, mapped out how and where we could rewild our planet, how our companies could be run in a way that they restored and nurtured nature instead of exploiting and destroying it, and groups whose sole focus was on how to replace everything that used crude oil. And there was more. But first we established a world economy and a partially global political system which didn’t aim at dominance, competition, growth or power but instead sought guardianship. Guardians over our resources. Guardians over our welfare. Guardians over our evolution. Guardians who initiated conversations when new discoveries called for possible adjustments. It was only afterwards that we, as a planet, took a break from economic and political tasks, took a deep breath and focused on restoring our planet. Amazingly, our changed habits, approaches and systems had already brought back a lot of nature, and our new measures for towns and cities reduced both heat and extreme weathers. The years of restoration are some of the happiest in our lives. We came together from so many different places, got rid of 75% of unnatural pavements, 70% of fences, 97% of bare facades and roofs, restructured our habitats to merge them with the natural world — and more. The last wars ended in this period, which was also a time of personal healing and finding our individual strength and joy. Today, we look back at the world of then and wonder why we had ever wanted to destroy our planet.

WAR & INJUSTICE IMPOSSIBLE On our planet no one dares to start a war. Not a clan war. Not a tribal war. Not a war between regions. Not a global war. Of any kind. Why? Because the moment anyone raises a fist or a gun, the moment anyone is exposed as producing weapons, the moment someone smuggles a missile to a potential launch site, the moment we, the people of our planet, hear about anything like that, we stop to work, we stop to go to the theatres, restaurants, football games, museums, cinemas, shops. What do we do instead? We meet in the streets, bring our chairs, our children and pets. We share our foods and chat. At first, we only reacted to wars and threats of war. By now, we go on strike globally whenever we hear of violence, abuse, exploitation, oppression, destruction and all other violations against us, our fellow humans and against nature. Admittedly, we love meeting in the streets and chatting. But we also love our power. We love how the agitators try to send negotiators. We love how they try to manipulate us. It’s such a laugh. But you know, once we were globally connected, we had the upper hand because we are the majority and no one messes with us. Every now and again, someone emerges who believes they have figured out how to start a war, how to become a dictator. But we are resilient. And, as mentioned before, we respond to every injustice, every violence, every violation with our refusal to work, to spend money, to be entertained — while enjoying quality time in our streets — until the aggressor backs off, until the violation and its source are removed and brought to justice. You see, they have to back off. You can’t go to war if everyone is having a chat in the streets. You can’t keep plotting to destabilise a country if no one is listening. You can’t ransack a country if no one is available to do the ransacking with you. Yes, sometimes it rains. And it’s a beautiful picture when you look out of the window at the sea of umbrellas. No, music though. We always party afterwards — and a lot. But during our strikes we are simply together, letting all concerned know that violations of any kind cannot happen. Not on our watch. We will not look away. We will not normalise. We will not pretend that there is nothing we can do. Because we know by now that we have all the power in the world when we come together and refuse to be part of a society where violence, injustice, inequality, oppression, discrimination or damage to our environment is on anyone’s agenda.

For once they had lost their bravado and shivered, frightened, because they had no idea how they got to this place. This place wasn't impressive. A forest clearing with a river at one side, obviously not on planet earth, no one had engineered and trimmed the plants. It was all wild, so wild, chaotic. The seven judges stood up from their stools and walked to the first king who, like the others, knew that he could not lie. Something in the air. Or maybe they had been drugged. WHO MADE YOU KING? My fantasies. I need to be liked and revered by everyone. The seven judges addressed the next king. WHO MADE YOU KING? The people around me. No one wanted to do it.
