Not sure if it has been brought up, but Diodorus (20.7) says that Agathocles burned his ships after he landed in Carthage. Not sure if that’s the mix up, but provides an alternative from antiquity and not just Cortes (and could say something about Sicilian still being under appreciated maybe?)

Read this while learning Italian a couple of years ago. Although I don’t think I can be of much help with the question, I will say that it’s such a wonderful and enriching read! Hope you enjoy it!

If you want to check some out, just look up Stollwerk cards. They produced a lot of great looking Classics ones like Phyrrus, Alexander, etc. The descriptions on the back are always fun to read too.

That’s awesome! I think I’ve come across those Batman cards before. I’ve actually just purchased an even older (1908) card produced by the German chocolate company Stollwerck depicting Darius I. I’ll make sure to post it once I receive it :)

Take good care of him, we’ll miss him a lot 🥲

And yes, I had to ask him to sign my copy of his book. I’m always too shy to do so with other scholars whose work I admire, but I couldn’t miss out on asking him. This copy will always be especial to me now.

I definitely will! That symbol and its significance had a fascinating development in the ancient Mediterranean and even throughout history up to today. This is a context I didn’t know about, though. Really appreciate your help!

This is really helpful, thank you so much! I see that Collon thinks it’s a “double-lion-headed” staff, but I see the resemblance to her scarf image…very interesting!
