AFAIK, there are no proposals for upgrading it. In the short term, you're better off using 3rd party integrations that are fully featured. Creature2D is decent but I don't know if still supported. Spine2D fairly recently has been supporting Godot and is very feature rich. Dragon Bones may also work.

I guess it depends on what you are looking to do. You can animate with curves in Godot. It's a different mode. It isn't the best as far as animation tools go though, you're right.

You could always use Spine integration. What game engine are you currently using that allows you to animate vector graphics?
