The Vosges and Alsace in occupation and wartime:

I've seen this in Alsace. Bullet holes which prompt you to follow the striations to work out where the shots were coming from. The defending, and withdrawing, units sheltering under fire. The monuments to the previous war providing temporary shelter in the next. Munster, Alsace, from Feb 1945.

It’s ghastly for you all and still very, very raw. I don’t have any wise words of advice, but I just wanted to let you know that other people have you in their thoughts and are empathising with you.

How utterly painful and heartbreaking.

How is Pip's best equine friend coping?
November 13, 2025 at 3:00 AM
I'm very sorry to read this, Lucy. What a brave and faithful friend she has been.

I meant to add that the veterinary staff deserve applause too. :)

I'm delighted to read this, Lucy! I hope she continues to do well.

How dare they ask? I have some pabi gwyn (white poppies, Welsh) with Hedd [peace] in the centre, and a Bleuet de France. It would be interesting to hear the remarks of our self-identifying ‘patriots’ but as remembrance isn’t an occasion to be deliberately provocative I wouldn’t go there.

… for a well recognised qualification in Word. I was furious!! The certificate showed I had achieved 95% in Word. How had I lost 5%? Especially as I hadn’t taken either their literacy test or their Word course.

It was an abject failure in tailoring the experience to the student’s needs or ability.
October 26, 2025 at 1:39 PM
That reminds me of when I started a course to learn Excel. Before letting me loose on the program they said I must do a literacy test. But, I said, I have a degree in English. Even graduates make mistakes, they replied. Briefly: I left. Several months later they sent me a gilded certificate…

I feel similarly.
One place we went through yesterday had a poppy on every other lamppost with a Union flag tied below the poppy. I felt profoundly uncomfortable with that. It went on for about half a mile. They are putting sentiments into the mouths of the now dead and to me it’s fraudulent.

I’m sorry I missed this yesterday. I don’t know horses but infections are horrible for all, and I endorse your wishes for her to have a happy and pain free life. I hope there are encouraging signs very soon.

That's my nightmare. My Captur has has its suspension repaired twice already & booked in for the next due entirely to the state of the roads. I'm really sorry for you; you don't need this on top of caring for a new baby and preparing for your next degree. I hope you can get a good few hours' rest.

We have one of these, with which you can suck it / them up and humanely put them outside. We bought because I freak at spiders. We didn't expect it to work, but it does!

Our oak trees have produced a huge quantity of acorns this year. We can't keep up with sweeping them up! We also have oak galls; neither our tree surgeon nor our gardener had seen them before. And yes, we have ladybirds, which are just seeking shelter to overwinter. I just put them outside.

We believe he has someone with the same name.

Thank you Chris and Tom. Briefly, someone (a stranger) has stated information about an in-law’s service claiming he was in France in 1940. We are certain it is incorrect (we have letters which show where he actually was: in Manchester) but want to clarify. We know his numbers from both world wars.
October 4, 2025 at 9:50 AM
Thank you. That will be most useful. I am a great admirer of Chris’s work in the LLT: it’s a wonderful resource.

I don't think like that. I know why you had to end that trip and in comparison this will be a blip. I'm angry and upset but I can see it in perspective.

I've been in France at times of civil unrest and fuel blockades. I won't be sorry to miss the September protests.

My favourite photos of the Vosges were taken in snow at the end of April but it isn't always so: have been several times in April &Y it's been springlike. 3PMSF tyres are mandatory from November 1 - 31 March in Vosges massif.

You haven't raked it up! The V5C has only just arrived. I'm tired & put out because I had everything booked, Netherlands, Germany, Alsace, then had to contact & cancel - such a waste of time - & now will have to plan all over again. Couldn't even apply for Crit'Air & Feínstaubplakette without V5C.
August 30, 2025 at 3:06 PM
I won't describe the stress, hassle, anxiety & regret, but the V5C finally has just arrived, 15 weeks after buying the car. It cost £25: had to be a postal application. Dealer is reimbursing.

I will arrange a trip for later in the year.

The sales person is now no longer working for that dealer.
August 30, 2025 at 2:45 PM
In May we changed the car. The sales person failed to complete the paperwork which would have triggered the issue of a VC5. I realised very recently we didn't have a V5C. Without a V5C you can't take a car abroad. In great sadness I had to cancel everything: the entire trip & all reservations.

Thanks! I saw that in a bookshop and I thought I'd bought it, but evidently I bought a book on military monuments in the Vallée de Munster instead because it probably was of more immediate use. I was more likely to see a monument

We should have been going there today; everything was booked. BUT...
