A post by Huffpost links to an article of theirs on how to disable AI features in Gmail is quote posted by someone I've anonymized saying "Gmail set this up so that, if you do opt out, you lose all of the useful features like mail filtering, spam filters, spell check, and shit that has been around for years. It turns your inbox into a dump full of everything, making it essentially pointless to use gmail at all."

At the same time, activists fighting renewable energy projects from the right are also lining up to fight data centers, echoing the same frustrations voiced by environmentalists while also tarring the infrastructure as part of a broader social change imposed by Big Tech elites. Take Indiana, one of the most popular data center destinations after Virginia, where the backlash is hitting_Indianapolis and rural GOP strongholds alike. Or Missouri, whose Senator Josh Hawley summed up my story here in one post in October. "These data centers are massive electricity hogs," Hawley said on X, months after notably leading the push for the' Trump administration to defund the Grain Belt Express, a large transmission line proposal that its developer said will help states meet data center electricity demand. "That's why Silicon Valley wants more transmission lines, solar farms and windmills," Hawley said. "Somebody has to pay for it all - don't believe any politician who says it won't ultimately be you."

I'm too proud of this to let it waste away in a comment thread on Alex Avila's latest video, so here's a crosspost
At the beginning of a comment thread, a user with the handle @titanc13 writes "2:07:00 a bit more context here-copyright law was also established because independent press shops were printing pirated books and giving no returns to the actual author, leading to many even best-selling authors living in poverty. Copyright was invented so that the intangible right of property that the courts are built on and respect could be applied to creative works so that artists can get fair recompense for their labor. 2:09:56 the word didn't exist, but the concept most certainly did. It was called Plagiary." My comment reads "Copyright was also also established because the Stationers' Guild influenced the passing of the Statute of Anne (an English law considered to be the first modern copyright law) because they were desperate to claw back their originally-Tudor-granted monopoly on the printing industry after the first English civil war eliminated its legal basis. Before the Statute, there was a sort of proto-copyright that printers would register with the Stationers Company, which in part helped the English crown censor books they didn't like, like anything that promoted Protestantism in the case of the Tudors. After the civil war, the Stationers' Guild did at first succeed at petitioning Parliament to give them back the old licensing system, but dudes like John Milton and John Locke spoke out against it because it was so censorious, and so the parliamentarians got rid of the licensing system again That was when dudes like Jonathan Swift and Daniel Dafoe started speaking out about the lack of piracy protections, and so the Stationers Guild, after several failed attempts to petition Parliament for some sort of copyright, finally petitioned Parliament to introduce the Statute of Anne, which finally introduced a copyright that was owned by authors with the stated intention of protecting authors from poverty. However, before the Statute, living authors were just paid a lump sum for their manuscript and that's it, and after the Statute, authors were still just paid a lump sum in a deal that also demanded that they sign away their copyright in order to get published Because they weren't getting royalty payments yet. And the Stationers' Guild still got to maintain the copyright registry.
