I agree, especially about unions, but e-commerce pays better, and in a tough economy, most people will prioritize self-preservation. I might choose differently, but it is a rational decision. Maybe this is where transit agencies can do a better job touting the intangible benefits of the job

As long as agencies are too cash-strapped to compete with the pay and benefits of e-commerce, they might need to emphasize the intangible perks of being a transit operator. Will it be enough though? Saying “this is a good job if you’re a people person” is pretty desperate

There’s also the issue of Amazon and other large shipping and e-commerce companies siphoning CDL drivers from transit agencies. From my perspective as a transit planner at the time, this seemed like a major cause of service reductions during the pandemic yet barely anyone talked about it
