Normally I just put single-word modifiers before the pi (e.g. "tomo pona pi telo nasa" for a nice bar). Can you give me an example of a sentence where this wouldn't work?

For a nimisin, I suggest "moto" (fr. Japanese もっと):
- tomo ona la tomo ni li pona lukin moto ("This house is prettier than that one ")
- mi la sina jo e mani mute moto ("You have more money than me"/"You are richer than me")
- sina la nena mama mi li suli moto ("My tits are bigger than yours")
- tomo ona la tomo ni li pona lukin moto ("This house is prettier than that one ")

If you want to add another modifier, just add another pi; that's what pi is for. This does create some ambiguity over whether you want to create a parallel pi-phrase or a nested one, but that's not unique to TP; most languages have shift–reduce conflicts.

My point is there's more to gender as a concept than whether one is mije, meli, or tonsi. Toki pona struggles to discuss many abstract concepts, and gender is one of them. I have my own share of problems with Butler; I just used her as an example of an author who talks about gender in the abstract.

Comparatives. You can kinda fake it with la-clauses or parallel statements but that's no real substitute.

Those (sort of) work for gender identity, but they still don't get at the concept of gender as an abstract social construct. Imagine trying to translate Butler into toki pona.

Toki pona may not have a word for "transgender", but it does give you the means to describe yourself as such: "mi meli/mije pi sijelo mije/meli". If you're NB and that doesn't work for you, then there's tonsi.
But the concept of gender itself? That's much harder to talk about.
