The explanation I hear is usually ‘collecting data is costly and slow, but simulating data is cheap and fast, so let’s do that’. You know what’s also cheap and fast? Spinning on my office chair. Looking at that tree. Doesn’t mean they say anything useful to complement or replace actual trials.
