Today marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising (28th June 1969) sparked by a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, New York The Stonewall Inn had been raided by police on countless occasions before but in 1969, the patrons fought back; protesting police brutality, corruption & discrimination against the LGBTQ+ Community. Whether Judy Garland’s Death (a few days earlier) was a factor is a question often raised. The Christopher St Liberation Day March was held on June 28th a year later, likely marking the first ‘pride parade’ in the U.S.A Some accounts suggest either Marsha P. Johnson or Sylvia Rivera threw the first brick at Stonewall, however, this claim has been refuted. What is undeniable though, is the impact that trans icons including Marsha and Sylvia had on the queer liberation movement. butch lesbian/ drag king Stormé DeLarverie, trans activist Miss Major Griffin-Gracy & many others involved in Stonewall also left their mark on LGBTQ+ history “It was a rebellion, it was an uprising, it was a civil rights disobedience-it wasn’t no damn riot.” - Stormé DeLarverie
