Have you tried Head & Shoulders?

Inside the clouds over Mt. Iwate
A photograph taken on the caldera rim of Mt. Iwate. (2038m) The rim slopes to the left down into the caldera, and to the right down the mountain. The rim continues in the center and disappears into a white mist. The hazy shapes of people can be seen, some closer, some further away, disappearing into the mist.

My linguist friend after I sent him this comic:
Clear distinction. Falling in a hole denotes a hole-space which can be more or less completely occupied by the referent, as in a hole where one’s head sticks out of the hole following the completion of gravity’s work on the body. As for falling down a whole, this denotes a process of falling more than a result post-fall. Yes, the object has fallen down the hoke, and the process may have concluded, but there remains a strong notion of a somewhat substantial vertical distance having been traversed during said fall. Of course these subtleties exist within the prepositions themselves, as being down vs. in emits nuance of separation via distance vs. mere occupation of space. To further this line of thought, you might move down a line, thus traversing a number of occupyable positions in a procession, whereas if you move in, you now occupy a given space, be it house or what have you.
