Also, couldn't every LEO claim they had a "bad experience" with some previous situation and then act erratically... I'm a teacher. I once had a very difficult student named Jason. Does this give me a pass to treat the next Jason I get in my class unfairly.

Yes, the immediate comfort he could have provided in those last moments was possibly just as important.
