I had a great time attending and presenting my work at #BMES2025 in San Diego. It was such a nice opportunity to talk about my and others' projects on bone tissue engineering. Thank you everyone for the great talks! 🧪👩‍🔬

Excited to be attending #BMES2025!

I will be presenting my work on fabricating oxygen releasing scaffolds for bone tissue engineering in Friday's poster session (T37). Interested in targeting hypoxia, hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers, or bone TE? Please come say hi 😀

Attended an interesting talk by Prof. Derek Amanatullah (Stanford Med), discussing dormant infections in joint replacements. Concl.: MPS-mediated response as biomarker enables better screening and patient prognosis.

Fully agree with this piece 🧪
In the past, I've contacted a Prof that miscited my paper (we did do the research, just in another ref). No response..

I think the reason is the long process of corrections post publ. So, better to ignore. Wrong citations should be treated easier, it will help everyone

Another TissueTalk is online, this time with with Prof. Warren Grayson (John Hopkins U, US)🧪
www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNuK...

Gave a clear introduction to the use of scRNA-seq in deciphering cells’ expressions during bone regeneration. Looking forward to reading the article on this.

New HBOC paper out by the Komatsu group (Chuo U, JP)🧪
- HSA-coated SFHbNPs (30 nm), to evade RES
- NPs shows good functionality, with p50=8 Torr
- Full resuscitation in hemorrhagic shock model, with similar results as the shed autologous blood (SAB) control

Watched last week’s TissueTalk with Prof. Irv Weissman (@StanfordMed, US)🧪

Was especially interested to hear the origin of the ‘don’t eat me/eat me’ signaling of CD47, which is something we wanted to explore with our membrane-coated HBOC NPs as well (1/2).

New paper on Hb-loaded ZIF-8 NPs by Hosta-Rigau’s group (@DTU_HealthTech, DK)👩‍🔬. This is a continuation on previous work on ZIF-8 HBOCs, assessing their stability, catalytic activity and stealth properties. Happy to have contributed to this project! 🧪 https://buff.ly/42Uqb2q

Just watched TissueTalk with Prof. Ellen Roche (MIT)👩‍🔬

She discusses i.a. how they use soft robotics for addressing end-stage heart failure (via a heart sleeve) and respiratory muscle weakness (via diaphragm support).🧪

Just got back from the annual lab retreat with the Fan Yang group @stanfordmedicine.bsky.social. 🧪👩‍🔬 What a great way to get introduced to all the amazing people and their projects this way!
And the locations wasn't bad either 😉 ☀️🦌

My first week at @stanfordmedicine.bsky.social:
- Giving a presentation about HBOCs🧪👩‍🔬, explaining that there is a lack of available donor blood
- Receiving the Stanford Report, encouraging people to donate blood

The coincidence is amazing. It’s great to see the active approach they are having here!

Weekendavisen just published an article regarding artificial blood substitutes, with an interview with Prof. Leticia Hosta-Rigau at DTU Health Tech.
Very nice to see our research reach the Danish news!

Wakabayashi et al. (Chuo Uni, Japan) uses PROx as alternative to PEG in HBOCs design.
* Polymer conjugation does not alter Hb folding
* T- and R-state synthesis allows for p50 modulation
* PROx-Hbs have lower viscosity than corresponding PEG-Hbs

New research on HBOCs from the Bäumler group (Charité-Universitätsmedizin, DE) 🧪
doi.org/10.3390/anti...

Interesting findings:
* CAT-HbMP has increased oxyHb content
* CAT-SOD combination best for protective effect
* Controlled Vit C conc (Vit C : Hb = 1:25) gives antioxidant protection

A previously unknown cellular behavior called ‘cell tumbling’ is reported by Yang et al. @Stanford.
Characterized by minute-scale whole-cell movements and rapid hydrogel deformation. Elicited by heightened cytoskeletal and nuclear dynamics.

New paper by Palmer et al. (Ohio State U), one of the big groups working on blood substitutes. Worth following their progress! 🧪
The pilot-scale production of T- and R-state PolyhHb allows for large-scale development and modulation of their p50.

Interesting read 🧪:
Spectroscopic characterization of Hb in presence of TATF-COF
+ TATF-COF has regular spherical morphology (2-5 µm)
- Usage of lyophilized Hb (metHb)
+ Only slight alteration to Hb structure upon conjugation
