Working on a column for Nature Chemistry with advice for chemists about writing op-eds, so counted up the opinion and editorial pieces I have written over the last 15+ years to discover more than 275 such pieces. Clearly I am opinionated!!

Happy International Tea Day! What are you drinking today? I have a lovely pu-erh my kids brought back from China for me. Photo is from tea with a Japanese hermit in the mountains on Shikoku.

What are the challenges facing Pope Leo? I have thoughts & so do some of my fellow Philadelphian Catholics. I am thinking about our current moment, where is mercy is routinely mocked by those in power and people are not just silenced but vilified, deported, erased. share.inquirer.com/KKPblw

On my desk: "May you never lose this sense of wonder, in your research & in your lives. May you be inspired always by the love for truth & awestruck by all that each fragment of the universe sets before you." Pope Francis, message to Vatican Observatory Summer School @vaticanobservatory.bsky.social

It is World Quantum Day, so apt to note that yesterday Bryn Mawr College unveiled a new plaque to mark Dr. Emmy Noether’s resting place. She died OTD in 1935. Bryn Mawr welcomed this refugee mathematician when other institutions balked at hosting a woman, no matter how eminent.

Proofs for an essay on the origins of meteorites have landed. Odds that Vatican City State has been moved to Italy by the copy editor, Lateran Treaty notwithstanding?

The political is personal for me. Lasagna, droopy bunny ears and the NIH cuts. quantumtheology.blogspot.com/2025/02/real...

Working on a reflection for the feast of St. Cecilia, and cannot get Simon & Garfunkel's Cecilia out of my head. This is not helpful, I think. #earworms

Mug of the day - St Ignatius of Loyola with uncaffeinated beverage in hand (Ignatius predates the arrival of caffeinated drinks to Europe)

Terrible things are happening in the world, and as sometimes it is more than I can take in, I am seeking refuge this morning in wonder and awe. MMOD (my mug of the day) and the three extraterrestrials in my office. #writing quantumtheology.blogspot.com/2025/01/alie...

A cartoon from my general chemistry class - I have no talent for drawing, but @errantscience.bsky.social is right, you don't need much to make the chemistry come alive.

It was -12C with the windchill - so enjoyed finding this 19th century infographic in my inbox from the American Philosophical Society. Aptly lowest temperature shown is -12C, about where oil of turpentine freezes and anhydrous sulphurous acid boils. #chemsky

A little pasta experiment. The leaf molds are ok but I suspect will lose their detail when cooked. The little carmelles (like candies in wrappers) were fun and easy. Next time I will try striped dough. Now everything is freezing. #chemistsWhoCook

I have indeed made tea sous vide. There are a number of papers in the literature in which tea is steeped in a constant temperature bath. (Including some also looking at effects of agitation).
