You have too much hope in humanity. I grew up in a deeply religiously conservative county in the American South. These people will gladly burn down their own homes and give up all their money if it means they can say racial slurs without guilt to a 5 yr old black girl in Starbucks.

Many of the major Nazi's in the 1930s and many of the Brown shirts weren't veterans of WW 1. Many veterans in Germany at the time were anti-war after the horrors they experienced. All Quiet on the Western book was an immediate best seller in Germany before the Nazi's came to power.
