Energetic enthusiastic extrovert who gives walking tours of Boston, advocates for fire safety nationally, and loves reading, learning, kickboxing, and yoga.
I took this photo last year at the Design Museum in Barcelona (Museu del Disseny de Barcelona). In their permanent exhibition, Common Objects: Local Stories, Global Discussions, I saw this excellent utilitarian sink/toilet called the W + W washbasin and WC from the Roca company.

The Last Bookshop, a marvelous used-book place in downtown LA, has a section labeled Decorative Books with the volumes color-coordinated.

I was very delighted to see the Copley Square farmers market yesterday on a quick sojourn. Tuesdays and Fridays for a few more weeks!

I’ve been giving walking tours in Boston for 19 years (and hanging around near Faneuil Hall, the Blackstone Block, and Haymarket for a lot longer than that). And yesterday was the 1st time I noticed this 100-year-old plaque at 16 North St. about the unsung hero of 1775, William Dawes. #midnightride

I accomplished a long-time goal last week by visiting Orchard House, just a 25-minute drive from where I live. It was my first visit but won’t be my last! Seeing the place where Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women was inspiring and poignant. #louisamayalcott #orchardhouse #concordma

The always-inspiring Shaw-54th Regiment Memorial still had flowers on it from the anniversary of the July 18, 1863 battle at Fort Wagner, SC, when I visited Sunday. Seeing the mini-bio of St. Gaudens, the sculptor, made me wonder what other such works have this kind of information. Few, I think!

Arrived downtown early for my tour. The park at One Post Office Square and this bench are nearly irresistible, but duty calls! It’s so gorgeous out! #lovelyday #lifeofatourguide #Boston

My next few tours for Boston By Foot tell two sides of the story of the American Revolution. On July 19 or July 27, join me for Boston’s Loyalists. On July 26, walk in the footsteps of patriots on the Road to Revolution. Register:

Excited to be in London this week for INTERFLAM 2025, a fire protection engineering conference at the Royal Holloway College of the University of London. The campus boasts the 1880s Founders Building and many women’s suffrage acknowledgments. We enjoyed cask ale at the Red Lion in nearby Egham.

What a difference a docent can make! On an art history tour in Barcelona, we visited the Joan Miró Foundation and our guide opened up a world for us. The building is by Josep Luis Sert, and the museum envisioned as a place for the people of Barcelona. #arthistory #Barcelona #docent

An art-oriented visit to Catalonia would be incomplete without a Dalí day. We travelled northeast to his hometown of Figueres to view his theater-museum and on to his hideaway in Cadaqués along the sea. #arthistory #catalonia #spain

More Gaudí from my recent trip to Spain: Casa Vicens. Once a summer home in a sleepy part of Barcelona, it is now hemmed in with dense development. Its beauty has been preserved carefully.

If someone has heard of Barcelona architecture, they have heard of Gaudí. His Parc Güell and Sagrada Familia are great examples of his singular style.

I’m back home from a wonderful 10-day art history tour in Barcelona and Madrid. Our Barcelona hotel was a work of Art Nouveau splendor. Meandering through the nearby Gothic Quarter revealed treasures including a well-preserved colonnade from a Roman temple. #art #history #spain #travel

I went on the excellent @bostonbyfoot.bsky.social walking tour Boston Reborn: After the Great Fire of 1872 earlier this week. Volunteer guide Harry Friedman researched and wrote this fascinating tour. Here he is showing us the (replaced) fire box that sent the alarm; rebuilt and saved structures.
