Treating yearbooks as a historical archive, Messner analyzed 120 years of yearbooks from his alma mater, Salinas High School, in California. The book offers a fascinating glimpse into the ways that racialized and gendered ideologies in public schools have changed - or stayed the same - over time.

I say men here rather than people, because even if a woman has billions of dollars, she's rarely described as "brilliant," and because @michelamusto.bsky.social 's research shows that "brilliant" is a highly gendered concept/term.
