My guess would be that narcissits respond aggressively to criticism not because they have a fragile ego, but because being aggressive seems like an appropriate reaction to them - given their values, world view, et cetera. Fits with the self-view of a tough, dominant guy. Just my two cents though.

Yeah, we assessed narcissism using self-reports. As does >95 of reseach in the social-personality field. Using such measures, people still find that narcissists easily get aggressive when criticized. But our work indicates that this might not be because their fragile ego is shaken.
