Another extreme year for European glaciers 😥. Nearly 20 meters of ice loss in the last 4 years at this place.
One more year: Ice loss at Konkordiaplatz on Aletsch #Glacier is just... wow 😲 Minus 4.6 metres of ice.
Will there ever be a call:
"Make Aletsch Great Again"?
It would be about time

Want do know about current status and future of rain-on-snow runoff events in central European mountain catchments? Check our new paper led by Ondřej Hotový from @sciencecharles.bsky.social at hess.copernicus.org/articles/29/.... Big thanks also to @jansei.bsky.social for great collaboration.
Rain-on-snow events in mountainous catchments under climate change
Abstract. The frequency and intensity of rain-on-snow (RoS) events are expected to change in response to climate variations due to changes in precipitation, increases in air temperature, and subsequen...

The first global comparison of glacier mass change reveals a global loss of 273 billion tonnes per year, an amount equivalent to what the entire human population on Earth drinks in 30 years. 🧪
First Global Comparison of Glacier Mass Change: They’re All Melting, and Fast - Eos
By systematically assessing data gathered by different methods, researchers refined estimates of global glacier melt and its contribution to sea level rise.

In case someone missed (and is interested), here we have the EStreams website (catalogue): estreams.eawag.ch
Maybe useful for knowing where to download European streamflow data 😁

Hunting the extreme year 2022...
Yes, I'm really worried about the current state of Swiss #glaciers! After a dry winter, the scorching heat of the last weeks pushes glaciers towards another black year.
Hoping for some cooling but the summer has only just started

With already green vegetation in the mountains, it is time to look back at the past winter. It was another year in a row with poor snow conditions in Czechia. Luckily, it did not affect our Winter school of snow hydrology that we organised for @sciencecharles.bsky.social and CULS students.

We are stoked to present a brand-new @natclimchange.bsky.social paper by our Jan Kavan! ❤️
Did you know that between 2000 and 2020, retreat of marine-terminating glaciers has exposed more than 2,400 km of new coastline in the Arctic?

It's the first International Day of #Glaciers!
The ice worldwide is under threat due to rapid #climatechange. This day puts a spotlight on glaciers as a vulnerable but globally relevant element of the climate system. It is not yet too late to save them!
