Friend of Leo.
I watched Alien Earth. Amazing innovation in a plot about a greedy company wanting to bring the Alien back to make money and not caring about the grunts. How on Earth did they come up with that fresh take?

I played the Lillypad Diaspora in Root, having had discussions here about how much they as a faction mirror Israel, and these are my reflections.

LD feel like playing bad guys. Built into them is a kind of rolling aggression, where building new forces means that you are forced into fighting.

In movies, when someone shouts "Brace Yourselves", or "Brace for impact", no one ever braces themselves against anything.

Is "Trump Suit" or "Trump Card" enough of a common concept outside of gamers that it can be assumed in a teach.

"Green cards are trumps." Is that an ok thing to say to people who are now big gamers and expect them to know it in general?

Brass, as a game, is about exploitation. It is a really good game too, but when making a new game in the series it was probably beyond time to address that and to allow the exploited within the game to speak back.

"Players take on the role of a ruthless industrial titan in the age of Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and Henry Frick."

Oh great, the chance to be Carnegie, again...

"Sometimes, if you want something to exist, you have to make it yourself" says Josie Long, which I suppose is what I am thinking about "Brass: Yorkshire"

Played Irish Gauge with someone who is relatively new to gaming, and who really loved it, and specifically really loved the moment she realised she had done all the work on Blue Train, while someone else was taking the profit.

The joy of seeing someone new just be able to express herself was ace.

A while ago I got into BGG trouble for saying that Portugal didn't discover India, where 100m Indians were, they colonised it.

Mostly I was in discussion with the kind of right wing ghouls who are now crying about having comments removed from the Codenames Harry Potter pages.

*Action Throttling*

Action Throttling is a board game mechanic in which a player is given a number of actions they can select from, but, even if those actions would be possible, those actions are restricted.

Listening to @jonronson.bsky.social et al's Things Fall Apart (BBS Radio Four) Episode Three is such a moment. I've heard that people pull over on the motorway because they are crying, listening to the moment when Steve Peters speaks.

It is such wonderful work.

Yesterday's John Company gets interesting.

People who turn up to Game Night with no games, but then veto games other people have brought, are in a mentally interesting position.

I've missed a few @boardgamebarrage.bsky.social but catching up I've missed you people, and the Pod is still absolutely smashing it.

I once saw Danny Boyle Bradford's Film Museum with his Dad, I assume, and his Son, I assume.

I shopped for books while he did the same and his Dad came to talk to him and could not have sounded more Lancashire, and his son came up and could not have sounded more Californian.

Shelf Stable is - once again - hitting it out of the park (Scoring a Six) and is a must-listen with So Very Wrong, Shut Up and Barrage.

In @sowronggames.bsky.social Mark mentions trolling as a bad thing, which I think it is, but rarely do we ever seem to recognise the way it has damaged the ability to process information in the world.

Last night someone close to Trump made an accusation that he has been involved in a crime...

I'm working through @agramuglia.bsky.social thoughts on Star Wars and feel like I've found a kindred spirit in the idea that the best Star Wars is - and always has been - in your own head.

There was a time we all seemed to know this.

If you are a publisher / designer going to UKGE, by all means hit me up if you have a game you'd like me to look at. I'm a freelance tabletop writer who is lucky enough to write for a few brilliant publications. If you're there to play, hmu also! I really want to meet folks for games.

The atomics of game design are so interesting.

If a turn takes 1 minute, and you plan for someone to have 36 of them, then you've got a 2 1/2 hour game.

So you make turns simpler - Imperial style - or you have fewer of them, but those decisions seem fundamental.
