New College of Florida was the first school we ever removed from Colleges Worth Your Money. Outside political influence can have devastating long-term impacts on public institutions. History has taught us this previously. See “Talmadge Cocking Affair” from Georgia in 1941.
New College today resembles neither the conservative dream nor the liberal nightmare. Part everyday small college and part proxy battle in the culture war, it is plagued by ordinary questions over how to boost enrollment amid extraordinary levels of outside scrutiny. chroni.cl/4lBcQ5N

The federal gutting of NCES—from ~100 staff to just 3—deals a major blow to data transparency + funding equity in education. IPEDS has long been vital to our work at College Transitions, and we’re a bit concerned about what’s at stake. #HigherEd #NCES

It's April, time for my annual appeal to @commonapp.org (or anyone, truly) to use their powers for good and streamline the college portal insanity.

The passwords, the usernames, the 2FA...it's all just too much.

Each year we try to educate folks on how competitive the admissions process is becoming at the nation's most desirable schools. Case in point is Michigan, with over 109,000 first-year applications. Just ten years ago, Michigan received around 52,000 apps.

Major staff cuts at NCES could have devastating impacts on the future of higher ed research, policy, and data transparency. If we lose access to relevant and timely data, we lose our ability to make informed decisions.
