Confound it! I was hoping we could chat here, but alright then. I’ll check out your DeviantArt instead. Maybe it’ll be easier to share those Tintin sound effects and other fun stuff there.

Hey Marissa, haven’t heard from you in weeks! I noticed your DMs aren’t on yet. I’d love to chat privately sometime, mainly to share some sound effects and fun stuff. Hope you’re doing alright!

I did try sending you messages before but didn’t hear back, where I recommend you about Miyazaki’s classic Future Boy Conan on DA. On Bluesky, DMs only work if you allow them in settings, by default only people you follow can message you.

If you say so! Still, it's a bummer about the Hazbin, Helluva, and John Woo stuff. But now I have to wonder: how are we supposed to talk about how some of the classic Lupin III sound effects should've been used in Tintin if we can't share them on here?

It's a goddamn shame you're not into Hazbin, Helluva, or John Woo, but finding out we're both into Tintin and Lupin III is an awesome discovery! I'd still love to chat more. Would you prefer to keep talking via posts or would a DM be cool with you?

Double bollocks! I was so hoping you knew John Woo's movies too! No worries though, I appreciate you clearing that up about the faves. It's totally cool!

Bollocks! I was so hoping you were into the Hellaverse, since I saw some of it in your faves on DA. But no worries! Quick question, have you ever watched Hong Kong movies like A Better Tomorrow or Hard Boiled? Would you prefer to DM or just chat here on posts?

Just bumping this in case it got buried. Also, pretty sure I heard Godzilla’s roar in Exmortis 3 when Mr. Hannay smashes the mirror and takes out The Reader. Gave me a weird grin when I caught that. Nice touch.

@benleffler.bsky.social Following up on Buffy, did the Clown Doll in Poltergeist ever scare the hell out of you? Not gonna lie, that clown was genuinely terrifying.

BTW, since you mentioned Buffy as an influence, I wonder if that also includes the 1992 movie with Kristy Swanson and the late Luke Perry, or just the series. The movie’s soundtrack had that C&C Music Factory track, Keep It Comin’, which always gave off a fun Halloween vibe.

Damn. I remember you once mentioned that a Halloween prop from 2003 was used as the model for one of the Exmortis cult members. They really looked like ghouls or zombies, especially with that eerie heartbeat sound syncing with the flashing images of them. Still hits hard even now.

Fair enough. Makes sense after all these years. By the way, there’s another horror Flash game from the same year as Exmortis called The Stone of Anamara (La piedra de Anamara). Not sure if you’ve seen it before, but it had a similar eerie vibe.

Thanks for clarifying! That opening definitely set the tone right. About the Rehayem house, was it actually from the Blair Witch games? A lot of people recognized it, but I saw you credited “various websites” in the end credits. Just wondering where the inspo really came from.

Spooky! I grew up loving AYAOTD on Nick, plus Goosebumps, X-Files, the Jumanji cartoon (not horror but creepy as hell), Archie's Weird Mysteries (like Archie meets Eerie, Indiana), and mystery thrillers like Silence of the Lambs and The Bone Collector. Great vibes all around!

@benleffler.bsky.social Hey Ben, just wanted to follow up on this when you have a moment, still curious about your influences beyond the films mentioned in Exmortis credits, and whether the game debuted anywhere before Newgrounds?

And I was wondering, did Exmortis debut on your old site before Newgrounds, similar to Goliath's Amazon release, or was Newgrounds always the intended first home? Curious about the original release plan.

That's incredible, Ben, thanks for confirming the Homer sample! Loved how the Rehayem residence in Exmortis borrowed from the Blair Witch games; did you play those, or what other horror games influenced you, in addition to movies like Evil Dead, Poltergeist and Hellraiser?

I've could've sworn I heard a voice clip in the Exmortis credits that sounds exactly like Homer Simpson from "Treehouse of Horror V" (The Shinning parody). Am I crazy, or was that an intentional easter egg? Curious if you remember that detail!

That was super insightful, especially how it started as a Flash learning project. That got me wondering about the end credits song, "Malevolent". Do you remember much about the "2wenty 4our" album by Circadian Rhythms? It's so hard to find; feels like lost media! Just curious about its story.
