The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act made the Great Depression worse, put more Americans out of work, and contributed to the landslide defeat of Hoover and the Republicans in 1932 to FDR and the New Deal Democrats. They didn't listen to reason then, and they're not listening to it now (not yet, anyway).
