Once again, we're listening to loud gunfire in @freeportmaine.bsky.social. Town officials were informed that many residents who suffer from anxiety are traumatized by this, but they refuse to stop it. A police sergeant even came to our home and tried to intimidate me into dropping my complaint. 1/2

It pops into my head all the time these days. In case you haven't seen the cover of the current issue of The New Yorker:

The big 2024 films are crowding it out, so I thought I'd mention Annie Baker's "Janet Planet." We watched it last night and thought it was terrific. A mother-daughter story that doesn't go where you think it will. Quietly powerful and beautifully done. #film #cinema #movies

If you’re interested in cinema, you should read this book. A little dated here and there (it was published in 1983), but utterly fascinating. #books #booksky #film #cinema #movies

I love this painting: Julie Mehretu's "Congress" (2003). Take a close look & admire the artistry of the storm. If you want to see a mesmerizing film, watch "Promises: Through Congress," which begins with a tight shot of the painting's center & slowly zooms out. #film #cinema #movies #art #painting

Tonight's old sweater at the Magras Film Archive. I'm not sure why I love "The Squid and the Whale" as much as I do, as it's terribly sad, and I wouldn't want those lives. Yet there's a tenderness here that I love. And it's beautifully written. Great film. #film #cinema #movies

Good news from the world of book reviewing: I’ve been asked to review the collected diaries of the great Australian author Helen Garner. This volume, all 800 pages of it, comes out in March. #books #booksky

If you, too, are waiting for Jesse Eisenberg's "A Real Pain" to come to home video, consider watching his first directing effort, "When You Finish Saving the World," in the meantime. A terrific film about, among other issues, learning to let people be who they are. #film #cinema #movies

He loved to dance. He loved jazz. And would it shock you to learn that he ate pears with “reverence for geometry,” cutting each fruit into matching segments before eating it? This biography of Mondrian is marvelous. #books #booksky

I feel that I would be remiss if I didn't call your attention to one of the most entertaining documentaries I've ever seen: "Cane Toads: An Unnatural History" (1988). It's about cane toad overpopulation in Australia. A serious problem, but a delightful film. #film #cinema #movies #australia

I took a break this afternoon to re-watch the Coen Brothers' 2009 dark comedy "A Serious Man." The story of Job moved to 1967 Minnesota. Michael Stuhlbarg is a physics professor for whom just about everything goes wrong. Not a cheery film, but brilliantly done. #film #cinema #movies
