Not everyone was so lucky, and I feel sorry for my insulated white friends. They will never understand.

You should see immediately the logical error in that point of view.

I was lucky. I fell in love with black girls. I valued my Native American friend. I admired my Mexican American friends. I learned about my own white privilege. It made me smarter and more compassionate.

I was forced to view the world through minority eyes and to learn empathy for oppressed people. Yes, brown people are actually oppressed; it is a real and terrible thing. Most whites don't have a clue. These whites assume because they don't feel the pain that racism can't be that bad.

I grew up in rural Illinois. Without integration and bussing, I would not have met many black and brown people, and I likely would have grown up moderately racist. My experience had certain costs, like long bus rides. Yet, I benefitted tremendously by having black and brown friends.
