We’re going to break our promise and raise income tax.

And you’re not going to also cut national insurance and then raise a dozen other minor taxes to make up the difference, right?

Right?

Mr Bates, wait! I’m not ready for you to go yet. You are safe to slay another day.

what are the odds that the people in Downing Street briefing this out would also break out in hives at the mere mention of proportional representation?

This is the NYT headline of video game advertising.

Thought the mention of the reshuffle was interesting here.

For all the stream of sugary political content, how many outlets have actually done a deeply reported piece on the reshuffle, explaining what it means for policy, or for the ideological and geographical mix of the front bench?

This felt like the low point of a pretty poor argument about income tax.

As @stephenkb.bsky.social has said, once you tune into this sort of non-argument formulation, it’s everywhere in this government’s comms.

The tone here makes it sound like they were scammed, when in fact they were just incompetent. *They* made contact with the guy, and simply failed to realise that he was not who *they* thought he was when *they* reached out to him.

The whole thing is written up as though “nature-connectedness” is an objectively measurable quality rather than presumably given a subjective definition by the study. Very odd!

Odd bit of policy debate: the chair of the transport select committee is disappointed that the govt isn’t going ahead with free bus travel for under 22s, but her quote argues for concentrating funding on improving service levels and routes instead of subsidising fares. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Very unchic to complain about being blocked but I think this was reasonably polite in response to a tweet that was just… not true?

“it’s terrible how social media rewards people sharing emotionally resonant simple narratives and discourages open discussion. anyway if you think inflation affects politics you’re a hick.”

Surprised to see Lewis Goodall implicitly arguing that the bulk of the money needed should come from spending cuts. I think it’s a bad argument and would leave Reeves coming back for more pain next year after failing to make the savings needed.

Not so much worried about people disagreeing with him as the vitriol - like this is an insane thing to say! Not saying I think it means Bluesky is doomed, but if we think it’s really important to get Westminster off X, then it’s really bad if this place is seen as having a norm of this kind of reply
