Fiftysomething Detroit dad, husband, copy editor, writer, journalist, still writing a very long but interesting book about Detroit in the 1940s.
First time hearing the word "majoritarian" -- to make democracy sound scary and worth avoiding!

Great headline.

Watching the episode of classic Ultraman called "Monster Anarchy Zone" and I feel bad for the researchers accidentally sent there, all but one of whom die. What a bad decision.

Still walking two miles a day. Some people who write about this city don't even live here, but I'm out here walking the streets. Shoe leather.

Somebody complained to FDR that Somoza was a sonofabitch, and he quieted him by saying, "He's our sonofabitch." I wonder if he would have met the head-choppers in the oval office tho

I sent my mini tort claim to the wrong address, to an insurance agent who took an interest in my case and helped me out a lot. He was just a nice guy helping me on his own time after his business closed. I forgot people like him still exist.

This week in 1953, Detroit’s Department of Street Railways (DSR) announced it would remove from service all but a dozen of its last Peter Witt streetcars. When first introduced by the city railway in 1921, they heralded an advance in transportation in Detroit. (see image)

If the history of Detroit police's STRESS units is any guide, when special crimefighting units start killing cops, that's when the real lawsuits begin.

I watched "The Outfit" with Robert Duvall last week and I started thinking that I really do enjoy the kind of movie where an outlaw tries to exact justice from a group of outlaws who dealt unfairly. Lawful Evil vs. Chaotic Evil is a fun ride.

Every once in a while these old newspaper articles surprise me more than they should.

I've been walking a mile or more a day. I'm glad I have good shoes.

I walked three miles this morning because I don't have a car right now. I went shopping and to the post office and to work. Flipped off three motorists.

In my research, I often find pictures of people who are about to die or near death, but I saw a new one on me yesterday: A front-page picture of a dead body. The 1950s seem brutal.

Researching 1940s LLC fraud, confidence jobs, construction contractors, bucket shops, etc. Is there any resource for how this sort of fraud worked?

This week in 1895, the Detroit Free Press declared not just the re-election of Detroit Mayor Hazen S. Pingree, but the most lopsided victory in memory. Pingree captured every ward in the city and won more than twice as many votes as his challenger.

Nice to see Cuomo fall flat on his face over and over again.

Purple Rain on the radio and I'm thinking it was this week 41 years ago I saw him at Joe Louis Arena.

Once upon a time, there was no dirtier slur in U.S. politics than "war profiteer."

When I was a kid, my parents bought a 40-year-old set of World Book encyclopedias. The set was from 1937, IIRC. I wanted to look up the person who I thought was the worst in history, that German chancellor. The article didn't say one bad word about him, just said he was controversial. Life-changing.
