A Dallas kid. SMU grad. Washington Post intern during the Watergate summer of 1973. 19 years at the Los Angeles Times, 28 at The Dallas Morning News. 54 years of bylines from 1969 to 2023. Lover of music that feeds the soul.
I was saddened to learn last night of the passing of Ruth Paine, whom I profiled for The Dallas Morning News in 2022. I mentioned Ruth's death to my editors at The News, from which I retired in 2024, and they asked me to write Ruth's obituary, which I felt honored to do.

It was my pleasure to have written the cover story on the great Willie Nelson for the current (August/September) issue of Cowboys & Indians Magazine. I found a full stack recently at my local Barnes and Noble. (Don't worry, I didn't buy them all. 🤣)

I wanted to express my gratitude to my friend and former colleague Michael Hogue, who continues to grace The Dallas Morning News with his rare talent. In this case, he chronicles a story Burk Murchison and I cover in our Dallas Cowboys book, "Hole in the Roof."

As the co-author of "Hole in the Roof," a detailed history of the Dallas Cowboys, I urge you to read our book, whose title, yes, does have a double meaning. Enjoy!
