At one Manhattan HS for newcomers, enrollment is down ~200 students this year, the school’s superintendent said last week.

A little more election-eve news for NYC schools: Enrollment is down 2.4%, the largest drop in 4 yrs. Seems likely immigration played a role - the influx of 50K migrants propped up NYC’s enrollment the last 3 yrs, but that’s ground to a halt under Trump.

Always a pretty wild reminder of the scale of NYC’s school system to see the class of new teachers assembled in the same place

Enraging story from @alexzimmerman.bsky.social. NYC hasn’t paid its ~1,000 Teaching Fellows the entire 7 weeks they’ve been working this summer, forcing some to go into debt to cover rent and food. This at a time the city is trying to hire in historic numbers: www.chalkbeat.org/newyork/2025...

What happens w/ mayoral control of NYC schools (up for renewal in 2026) is going to be really interesting if Mamdani wins. And fwiw Mamdani himself gave perhaps the most clearly anti-mayoral control response of all the mayoral contenders we asked about it: www.chalkbeat.org/newyork/2025...

In the days following Trump's EO targeting schools' support of LGBTQ+ students, as many NYC families anxiously awaited reassurance from the city (www.chalkbeat.org/newyork/2025...), City Hall debated, then nixed idea of issuing a strong statement, per @emmagf.bsky.social

Schools are working hard to reassure families it's safe.

And while Eric Adams has encouraged immigrant families to come to school, some educators said Adams' growing closeness w/ Trump + refusal to criticize Trump directive allowing ICE arrests in schools undercuts that message:

And this one that puts into perspective how progressive NYC's in-district school funding formula is. In the rest of the state, there's little guarantee higher-poverty schools get more $$ per student than lower-poverty ones, but in NYC, there's a steep line.

Some helpful graphs in this study on NY school funding - like this one showing the progressiveness of NY's state funding formula (directing more $$ to districts w/ more student need) is completely offset by wealthier districts raising more $$ from local taxes. cee.tc.columbia.edu/media/center...

Sharing a little news from NYCPS just a couple mins ago: enrollment in NYC public schools stayed pretty flat this year, dropping .1% after rising slightly last yr for the first time in a while.
