A reminder that the Thistle service was originally proposed on the back of an HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs in Glasgow in 2015 (!), and the strongest predictor of infection was Cocaine injecting. We still have limited treatment options for this group.

New figures also show that the vast majority of people who have used The Thistle are men.

Media debate over the last week on the launch of Glasgow's drug consumption facility has been thoroughly depressing. Advocates & opponents consistently missing the main aim of the service (to reduce harm related to public injecting in the immediate area) and being dragged into a drug death debate.

A new Cochrane review of interventions for quitting vaping has been published today.

There is low-certainty evidence that varenicline may help people to stop vaping.

Text-messaging based interventions may also help youth/young adults to quit.

The Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision was a 2022 US Supreme Court ruling that overturned the constitutional right to abortion in the United States
Me, a public health person, just sitting over here reflecting on the fact that the US has experienced a 7% increase in infant mortality post-Dobbs.

Like, do you realize what that says about this society from an ethical perspective? That we made policy choices that caused this?

Just a reminder:

All vaccines used in public health have been rigorously tested. Their benefits greatly outweigh their risks. While a few people have a medical reason for not taking vaccines, most people (and the population overall) will benefit. Doctors who claim otherwise are irresponsible.

Thought this was a helpful discussion that new and old public health trainees alike can relate to about the shift from being a specialist to a generalist in public health training and coming to terms with that. Some great advice from some public health leaders in the replies!
The hardest thing about public health training for me so far, is adjusting to being a generalist not a specialist.

My brain is a deep-diver and wants to have a solid grasp a topic.

Now I need to know just enough about lots of topics to get by. But all those topics change often. How do I keep up?

Suggests quitting vaping may be quite a bit easier than quitting smoking.
