I'm a classical composer, forged in the late 20th century. After a long career in tech and pro audio (very long story), I'm retired and composing again at a regular pace. https://www.michaelcarnes.net

I have to admit that I enjoyed Mahler more when I was much younger. That has diminished a lot, but there are still a few things I admire. That comes down to just a moment here and there. The last choral cadence in the 2nd still knocks my socks off. I most like the 4th because it's less bloated.

(Last remark, I promise) Difference is that audiences in those days were more willing to give a piece a few tries to get accustomed to what the piece has to say. Nowadays we're in too much of a rush to settle in with something new and challenging. I'm honored to be part of a long tradition.

(continuation) There's a marvelous book by Nicholas Slonimsky called "The Lexicon of Musical Invective" He quotes scathing revues of Brahms, Ravel, and dozens of other composers now recognized as great). Criticisms of those composers were much rougher than your own. (one more installation)

Amazing how much hostility modern classical gets from some folks. It's part of a very long tradition that goes back 600 years or so. Chances are that if you don't like Lygeti (or Lutoslawski, Boulez, Carter, etc) then you probably wouldn't care much for Gesualdo of Josquin either (to be continued).

Great piece. Hard for me to find a favorite, since there's something special about it all. But Derive 2 would be a good candidate for me
