Where would we be without a “show me your workspace” thread.

Now I’m approaching my ‘veteran’ years I work a lot at home, with the family scraggling round, so I’m mostly focussed on comfy chairs and a thick, childproof door.

What’s yours look like? 🎹💙
New studio space is finished. Let the quiet & loud begin. 💙🎹

Musical memories seem to go into a similar deep part of the brain as smells. They’re often some of the last to fade when we age, and that striking sense of being transported when you catch a song fragment … feels like one of core elements of being human.

What’s your earliest musical memory? 💙🎹

I heard the trailer for @hannahpeel.bsky.social ‘s new Radio 3 show, brass banding, and it took me right back - Batley Grammar School band, then the Yorkshire Post, then the Albert Hall! Amazing music making, rooted in the community, and open to all. Long live the brass band. 🎺💙🎹

I’ve updated my blog with a couple of articles about being a composer in an AI world, and music editing for films. All practical advice from a veteran! Feel free to share with any young composers and anyone entering the film & TV music game. 🎹💙

Is using AI to write, draw or compose making us less human? 🎹💙

Last night was the 1st real step on my new recording project “The Seasons”, with a trip to the Painted Church, Cambridge to hear The Gesualdo Six.

In 2025/6 I’ll be working with some amazing chamber ensembles + recording my new music with them in beautiful locations.

Do come & walk along with us.

We planted a weeping cherry tree in our garden before Christmas, and are just seeing it come into blossom for the first time. In case you needed something beautiful to balance out … all this. 🎹💙

As a cascade of AI generated art and music ‘products’ fill our feeds, is sharing a human process going to be the only thing that matters? 💙🎹

Wonderful Piano Day performances at the Barbican last night for the @mannersfaber.bsky.social launch event. Maybe the film&TV agenting and publishing world is on the turn?

Much of the debate around AI 'art' surely misses the point that art is as much about the practice and making, as it is about the outcome. Typing a prompt and clicking on an image or track is the thinnest, most meagre experience of making art or music I could possibly imagine. 🎹💙

The Holocaust Memorial Day coverage on BBC Radio 3 this morning is so extraordinary. Music and words making the unthinkable somehow briefly within reach.

None of the music streamers are perfect, and some seem inherently destructive to the music ecosystem, but Bandcamp seems the most authentic way for musicians and listeners to connect.

I’ll be doing Bandcamp exclusives this year so do follow if you’d like to hear them.

Book tip: Jeremy Eichler's Time's Echo draws a series of original, compelling connections between composers in the run-up to WW2 + puts their music in context in a way I'd not read before. It's sent me back to listen to the music with fresh ears too, which is always telling. 💙🎹

I’ve written a lot of music for TV over the last 6 months, and while I’ll never not be grateful to accompany such wonderful shows as Unforgotten and Sister Boniface, it’s always a good feeling when the musical pendulum swings back to my own projects.
