I gave this talk at Growing with Grief in Durham earlier this week, representing Transitions LifeCare

"What I don’t always share with people about my time with hospice is that the first few years of my career were a crash course in caregiving, grief, trauma, and loss in my own personal life... '"
There is a field. I will meet you there.
This is a presentation I gave representing Transitions Life Care, the hospice where I minister, at “the Growing in Grief” program at St.

Today's hospice centering moment.
"You are not what you do. You are not what you have. You are a full member of the human family... In times when you feel bad about yourself, try to choose to remain true to the truth of who you really are."

Powerful reminder from our morning devotional this morning. Even in darkness, God is yet birthing resurrection with new life.

This struck me as I read it this morning. When I summarize what I point people to in my work as a chaplain, when I lay aside religion specific to a set faith tradition, I don’t know that I could come up with a better description. This is something we long to encounter, and long to participate in.

When we lose someone, we encounter reminders of them throughout our life, and at first it can be hard to know how to handle them. To hear a song, to encounter a holiday, to visit a place that remind us of them can be overwhelming.

From our morning devotional today. Such an important reminder in our age of mass deportations and lawless disappearing of those our leaders find inconvenient. We trust not in chariots horse. We trust in the name of the Lord our God

“As we each face our own trials, our own challenges, our own moments of struggle and isolation, we are reminded of the need to not get caught up in the stress of the moment, but to look to connect with a bigger picture ourselves.”

Job’s experience, and the experience of so many on my hospice line, also teaches the lesson that, at the end of the day, after all our questioning and all our honesty, those answers we seek are not coming.

The temptation Jesus faces in this text is to craft a ministry, a Gospel, and a spirituality all with only room for positivity. All about manifesting miracles. All about the victory. All about the abundance. All blessing with no suffering.

though I less and less find answers in my work, let alone my own life, as to why things much bigger than my bike accident happen, every day I witness the power of God to bring beauty from the ashes, joy from the pain and tears, life sends our way.
