it’s an old state from the 80s, older buildings in hk often go through external repairs. nets and coverings are meant to stop tools and debris falling on people, but they deliberately chose to cheap out on building materials. residents rarely move out because housing is scarce and insanely expensive

i am utterly speechless and disgusted by how this was allowed to happened.

7. as of nov 28, 128 were confirmed dead, 79 injured, and 200+ missing
8. 9+ people have been arrested, 3 on the alleged charge of manslaughter

at multiple points someone chose ignorance, greed, and negligence. now the ~4000 residents that live in the state paid the price.

6. the fire alarm system and emergency system was non-functional. the windows were covered with styrofoam. residents had no chance of noticing the fire until it was too late

5. at the end of october the building department issued a safety notice demanding all buildings check their scaffolding netting’s fire resistance

4. in 2024 the building management started a $330M HKD renovation project, the most expensive out of 3 options with a difference of $150M HKD. multiple invoices contained “miscellaneous costs” with zero transparency

3. what caused the fire to spread so quickly was the use of unlawful non-fireproof netting used to wrap the buildings and the styrofoam used to cover windows; according to the labor department buildings over 15 meters must use fire-resistant netting, but the development company chose to cut costs

2. the bamboo scaffoldings have nothing to do with how the fire spread. bamboo has a high ignition point and scaffoldings are treated previous to their use; most of the scaffoldings are still standing on the buildings. they’re part of hk culture and now this is being used as an excuse to outlaw them
