This is a sharp and timely concept. “Performative infighting” captures how staged internal conflict isn’t weakness, but a deliberate strategy to strengthen in-group identity and loyalty. Focusing on Steam as a case study makes the mechanism especially clear and relevant.

Thanks! Greetings from Europe too — Austria never gets old 😊

Yes — examples like Transnistria or Austria’s experience under Nazism show that authoritarian movements emerge from layered political and historical conditions, not from one social movement or ideology alone.

There’s a strong argument that people living in Switzerland understand the practical limits of isolation better than most. The repeated failures to disengage from Europe are rarely highlighted outside the region.

That happens even when you know Switzerland well — the landscape always finds a way to surprise you.

Switzerland’s tradition is to allow open dialogue, even with controversial figures. Allowing someone to speak doesn’t necessarily mean endorsing their views.

I can understand that. Travel can be incredible, but without purpose it often doesn’t feel fulfilling.

Strengthening research and innovation ties is essential for long-term competitiveness and sustainable prosperity.

It’s more accurate to say that periods of rapid social change often create backlash. Historically, authoritarian movements tend to exploit fear and uncertainty, rather than being caused by any one group or rights movement.

True! I used to spend four to five weeks in the US every year, but not anymore. This year I’ll be in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.

Exacto 😄 Múnich ya es un gran “munichipio”.
Con Stadtbezirke aún se puede jugar un poco… pero Stadtbezirksteile ya suena como que el alemán decidió ganar por KO lingüístico 🤔

I agree. The signals were already quite clear by then, unfortunately, and the subsequent summits didn’t really change the underlying dynamics.

I’ve heard of it, but haven’t had a chance yet.

I understand the concern — though NATO would say deterrence is how it tries to preserve peace, even if that logic is deeply contested.
January 18, 2026 at 9:11 PM
Greenland talk aside, the US presence in Europe is about deterrence and logistics. That doesn’t really change overnight, even with a Trump presidency.
January 18, 2026 at 9:08 PM
I agree. In the German context, keeping it simply isn’t acceptable. Dismantling it is necessary.
January 18, 2026 at 9:06 PM
Yes, very much so here in Germany. Catch you around!

Lovely choice! Freiburg’s beautiful — great old town, amazing food, and you’re right on the edge of the Black Forest.
January 18, 2026 at 7:57 PM
That’s brilliant. Funny how even experienced athletes end up re-learning basics — and how motivation comes from the most human places.

I agree. Working-class and municipal golf is such a big part of Scotland’s golfing DNA, but it rarely gets talked about outside the country.

Haha, classic Germany surprise 😄 Sundays there are really quiet. Still sounds like a lovely weekend with your lad though.
